“You need rest.”

“I’ve been resting.”

She shifted, attempting to get up, but Carter wasn’t having it.

“Where you going?”

“Bathroom.”

“Come on?” He stood and extended a hand but her eyes shot up to his, waiting with a hard, unmovable expression.

“No. I’m fine.”

“You had a baby, Kenni. My baby. If you need me…”

“Relax, big guy, I need you but just not to use the bathroom.”

“Stubborn ass.” He smirked and helped her up anyway but let her do the rest on her own. McKenna was grateful.

She was already uncomfortable in her body and didn’t need Carter having a front seat to every aspect of the process. When she was done in the bathroom and eased back onto the sofa, she was situated next to Carter who had the bassinet so close it brushed his legs. He had one hand resting across their son who was wrapped tightly in a blanket. She watched Carter as he studied Asier, taking in every detail. He seemed amazed by him, which she understood because she was too.

“This isn’t too tight?” Carter’s eyes narrowed and she grinned.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“He’s kinda used to tight spaces.”

Carter frowned, lifting his eyes to her. “Yeah, I guess so.”

“If I ever agree to do this again, I need you to test my sanity. As much as I love him, he’s done things to my body that I can’t begin to understand,” McKenna complained. Carter glanced at her and smirked.

“You grew a whole ass human in your body, Kenni. What did you expect?”

“I don’t know. Most people make pregnancy look adorably cute and fun.”

“You pregnant again, adorably cute, doesn’t sound like such a bad idea.”

“You do realize that the kid follows the pregnancy.”

“I know how this shit works, Kenni.”

“Just checking.”

He gripped her chin, bent his head, and kissed her softly. “You not giving me any more kids?”

“Maybe.” She smiled, glancing at their son.

“At least one more,” he challenged and kissed her again.

“Fine, but you better make it worth my while.”

“Haven’t I already?”

Her smile was slow as it stretched across her face. “Yeah, you have.”

Carter chuckled and kissed her on the forehead. His home felt different. His life felt different. He was different. Father. They had a son and McKenna was back in his life. Two things that changed the trajectory of everything he believed to be true about who and what he was.

For the past couple of months, Carter and McKenna had settled into a space of finding their rhythm and he fucking loved every second of it. Nothing could compare.

My family.

My balance.
