She ended the call and McKenna grinned, tucking the phone beside her and focusing on the TV again. It was late morning and she was already prepared for a nap so she scooched lower on the sofa, tucked her arm beneath her head, and didn’t stop the lazy haze from happening.

How the fuck can one man be so stupid?

Carter watched as Jessup walked one of his many mistresses to the Audi SUV he purchased for her under his company. One of three she owned along with a house one neighborhood over from where his wife and children lived. Carter assumed it was so he had the ability to split his time discreetly between both residences.

Bold muthafucker.

But still a stupid fucker.

As soon as Jessup kissed her goodbye and she pulled away from the hotel, Carter made his move. Jessup’s lovesick ass watched her moving through the parking lot, which meant he wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings.

She probably fucked him well enough to make him drop her a huge wire transfer while he dropped a few more brain cells.

As soon as Jessup turned to walk away, Carter pulled up beside him, almost running the man over. His window was down and the 45 Tactical was aimed right at his crotch.

“Get in the fucking car.”

“No, it’s broad daylight and you’re not that careless. What the fuck are you gonna do, Carter, shoot me?”

“Yeah I am and thanks to you trying to hide that bitch from your wife, you made sure she parked at the right corner of the building. No cameras. No witnesses. No way for anyone to know I was the one who shot you. Now get in the fucking car or I pull the trigger here first and one goes in your head.”

Jessup glanced down at the red dot that landed at his zipper. Carter noticed the man’s clenched fists and smiled.

“You can try to run but I’m a really good fucking shot, which is why you’re a repeat customer. Get in the fucking car.”

Jessup could try to run. He wouldn’t get far. Carter was better than a good shot, he was the best.

Silently admitting defeat, Jessup yanked the door open and sank into the passenger seat. Before he could close the door, Carter dropped the gun into his lap and pushed a needle into Jessup’s neck with ease. He used both hands with equal skill.

“What the fuck did you just inject me with?”

“Methohexital and if I gauged it right, you’ll be out in a matter of minutes. If I didn’t, you’ll be dead and that will royally piss me off.”

Carter watched Jessup blink several times with his hand clutching the injection site. He opened his mouth to speak but the words never came. He blinked several more times, lids heavy, system flooded. Carter smirked but kept the gun trained on him until Jessup was completely out.

Now it’s time to make you fucking suffer.

An hour later, Carter sat in a rusted metal chair across from Jessup who had finally begun to stir and moan, coming out of the sedation the methohexital had him under. Carter was a patient man, so he waited, plotting all the painful ways he would make Jessup pay for keeping him away from McKenna for longer than planned.

“About fucking time,” Carter mumbled and leaned forward, dropping his elbows onto his knees. When Jessup’s eyes peeled open, he frowned sluggishly and his eyes swept the dimly lit space. Once he realized there was no hope left in this scenario, he mumbled the words he prayed would help him.

“I have something you want.”

“You don’t have shit I want,” Carter returned and flipped open the serrated pocket knife he had been waiting to use. Without a second thought, he drove it into Jessup’s thigh and twisted the jagged metal nice and slowly.

The screams that cut through the air were soothing to Carter while Jessup clenched his teeth. His hands were secured behind his back, attached to the chair so there wasn’t much he could do but scream and whine like a bitch. His brown skin flushed then lost a few shades in color.

Carter yanked the knife free and drove it into Jessup’s other thigh. The way his voice elevated with a high-pitched scream brought a smile to Carter’s face, but it quickly dropped.

“The black coin left on your porch the day your mother died…”

The message that was delivered as to why his mother was murdered. Carter’s expression turned deadly.

“What the fuck did you just say?”

He lifted from his chair slowly, yanked the knife free, and placed it against Jessup’s neck.

“The coin. I know who left it and why.”
