“Who lives here?”

“No questions,” Carter reminded McKenna before adding, “You can wait here if you would prefer. I won’t be long.”

“No, I’m going,” she rushed out. It was broad daylight, however the neighborhood they were in was rundown and appeared to have dark clouds hovering. The skies were clear up until a mile prior to entering the community. Everything shifted when his vehicle pulled onto the current street. She damn sure wasn’t staying there alone.

Carter arched a brow and she huffed. “I’m going.”

He nodded and stepped out of the SUV they arrived in. He parked under the metal carport attached to the home but anonymity wasn’t required. There were no cameras anywhere on the block that weren’t controlled from the house they were about to enter because Lynx preferred privacy.

Today that would work against him if Carter’s assumptions were proved correct. Lynx had also purchased the other three homes on the small cul-de-sac which meant no other residents lived within close proximity. Another small but relevant detail that worked in Carter’s favor and the only reason he allowed McKenna to tag along.

There wouldn’t be any video footage of McKenna being within the radius of a dead man's house. Although Lynx was currently alive and well, he wouldn’t be after Carter got what he needed.

Once McKenna was out of the SUV, Carter took possession of her hand, leading them to an entrance at the rear of the house. As soon as they stepped to the door, Carter lifted his face and locked eyes on the hidden camera that hovered overhead. Lynx had them surrounding the property. Being a resource for sadistic criminals wasn’t the type of profession that left you with the ability to sleep soundly at night.

Lynx understood that at any moment he could end up on the wrong side of a bad situation. No one entered his home without him granting access. Carter had been there a handful of times. Although the exterior looked dilapidated, the interior was fully gutted, modern, and employed top notch security which included high-end cameras that kept eyes on every inch of the lot and the thirteen hundred square foot house he resided in.

After a few seconds, the lock on the door flashed green and Carter stepped inside, bringing McKenna with him.

“You come here alone, Reed. You know my rules.”

As soon as they stepped into the kitchen, Lynx appeared in the arched entrance with a harsh, unwelcoming expression. Carter didn’t give a fuck. He was more interested in the look that washed over Lynx when he quickly eyed the woman next to him.

McKenna hadn’t noticed. She was too busy staring at the small-framed man with wooly hair and sharp features. He wore baggy sweats that swallowed him and he had to be a few inches shorter than her five foot eight height. The beard that covered the lower half of his face was just as wooly as the hair on his head and extended about six inches below his chin, making him even more disturbing in appearance.

“If she’s here, you can trust her as an extension of myself, which means she’s not an issue or a threat.”

Carter felt McKenna tense beside him and tightened the grip on her hand as a reminder that he was there. She was always safe in his presence. If Lynx felt threatened, before he could reach one of the multiple guns he kept stashed around his home, he would be subdued and, if Carter felt it necessary, no longer breathing.

Lynx narrowed his stare on Carter before his eyes slowly moved to McKenna. He wasn’t happy. Carter didn’t give a damn, she was staying.

“Just tell me what you need so you both can get the fuck outta my house.”

McKenna’s eyes darted up to Carter’s profile just in time to catch the arrogant smile that tugged at his lips before he spoke.

“I need information.”

“You always need information.” Lynx scoffed and started moving. Carter followed, keeping McKenna at his side. “You could have discussed this over the phone like you usually do.”

“It’s something that needs to be handled with discretion,” Carter stated from the doorway while Lynx dropped his small frame into the computer chair. McKenna’s eyes scanned the room, noticing the multitude of paneled computer screens that lined the wall above his workstation. They displayed the entirety of the small street they were on, capturing the area from different angles. When her eyes lowered to the U-shaped desk with three large monitors and a laptop encased in thick, military grade metal she felt a rush of panic travel down her spine.

Who is this guy?

“Okay, well, what is it?”

Carter removed the coin from his pocket and held it up for Lynx. When Lynx reached for it, Carter pulled back and shook his head.

“You don’t touch this.”

“Then what the fuck do you want me to do?”

“I need to know who it’s attached to. Anything you can find, no matter what it is.”

“How am I supposed to know who it’s attached to?”

“Information is your thing. Do what the fuck you do.”

Lynx tensed and his eyes left Carter and shifted to McKenna. She didn’t like the feel of being his focus, which Carter picked up on, so he pointed to Lynx’s computer. “Black coin, dark angel, Roman numerals. Search anything related to those three details.”
