“McKenna, this is Emir, Kohen’s son.”

Kohen Corvidae, the host. She remembered the name. When Emir extended a hand, she glanced at Carter, who offered a barely noticeable nod of approval. She offered her hand which he accepted and shook firmly.

Emir’s smile expanded. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, McKenna.”

“Same.” She returned a smile.

“You two drinking?”

Carter glanced at McKenna who looked around. “Do you have wine?”

“The most expensive money can buy,” Emir stated with amused eyes.

“Over there.” He pointed to a corner where a bar befitting the elegance of the home extended the length of one wall. His eyes returned to Carter. “My father wants to see you at some point tonight but for now, enjoy.”

Emir walked away with a confident stride, telling of his arrogance.

“He’s charming.”

“He’s full of shit,” Carter mumbled, guiding Mckenna through the room, dodging bodies. Several people made eye contact, nodding. Women watched Carter move with his natural confident gait, but he didn’t seem to care who had eyes on him.

When they reached the bar, he asked if she wanted red or white. After her answer he ordered a Riesling. McKenna recognized the label, knowing it was a Divine Vines brand.

Impressive.

While they waited, McKenna stared at Carter and simply grinned.

“What?”

“I said white, you specifically requested Riesling. I thought you were a brown liquor kind of guy.”

“I am, but I know other shit. I also know Kohen likes to show off so he would have it on hand tonight.”

“Maybe you’re the one showing off?” She smiled teasingly.

Carter paused his response when the server approached with a wine glass exposing a crow etched into the expensive crystal. When Carter accepted and handed it over to McKenna, he responded.

“Showing off for who? You don’t like me, Kenni. There’s no point in trying to impress you.”

She sipped then lifted her eyes to his. “Do you impress women?”

“Not intentionally but I can’t help being impressive.”

McKenna rolled her eyes and sipped the Riesling once more. “This is good.”

“At five grand per bottle it better be fucking phenomenal.”

“Five…shit, are you serious?”

His expression remained hard. “I told you he likes to show off.”

“You’re such a contradiction.”

“How?”

“The you I remember seemed so different from the you I’m experiencing now.”

“Because you judged a book by its cover. You made assumptions about me, about who I was, and for the most part you were right.” Carter edged closer, his body blocking McKenna’s view of everyone around them. “I’m that scary guy you assumed hurt and killed people. I’m also a man who can wear a tux and order wine by name, blend, and brand. But most importantly, I’m the man who knows every inch of your body so I’m well versed in how to make you cum.” He smirked and leaned in closer. “But to your point, in order not to stand out, I have to fit in every situation, hood shit, classy shit, being the regular guy you see walking down the street minding his business… But I’m not regular, Kenni. I do very bad things but mostly to very bad people.”
