He smiled, leaning into his wife, delivering a kiss to her cheek. “You don’t know shit.”

“I might not know shit but I know my husband.” She angled her head back and glared at him. He chuckled and she turned her attention to McKenna. “Elena Corvidae and you are the only woman who’s ever held this one’s attention.” She motioned to Carter. “I’m impressed.”

McKenna’s cheeks warmed and her eyes shifted discreetly to Carter before she extended a hand to Elena. “McKenna.”

“McKenna, nice to meet you.” The women shook hands then Kohen addressed his wife.

“We need to step away. McKenna is going to spend some of Carter’s money, I figured you could help with that since spending money is one of your fortes.”

“That sounds dangerously close to a complaint, sweetheart.”

“Because it is, but also one I enjoy having the privilege of addressing.” He kissed her cheek once more.

“Mhm. Come, McKenna. Let’s go do our worst.” She looped her arm through McKenna’s and left the men. Carter kept his eyes on them until the women reached the rear of the ballroom and paused in front of the first display.

“Never thought I’d see the day when Carter Reed no longer has possession of his own balls.”

Carter laughed in amusement. “I admire the way you still own your manhood without possession of yours. Figured it couldn’t be all that bad.”

Kohen smirked and nodded to the entrance. “Let’s go, I have something for you.”

“I hadn’t planned on working tonight so I hope that’s not why you insisted on me being here.”

“No, and this isn’t work. It’s a show of gratitude.”

The two men left the ballroom and traveled down the hallway until they reached a small elevator where they descended two floors down and stepped out into the basement. They then took the stairs one level lower where they reached a small corridor that led to a steel door.

“What’s in there?”

“You’ll see.”

“Nah, fuck that. What the hell is in there, Kohen?”

“You don’t trust me, Carter?” Kohen asked calmly, expression neutral.

“I don’t trust anyone, which you already know.”

Kohen nodded. “You don’t but I assumed we reached a place of understanding.”

“Assumptions get you killed…”

“‘Trusting your gut can save you.’ I know the saying very well. It’s one your father used often.”

Carter grimaced and Kohen added, “What’s your gut saying, Carter?”

After a brief stare down, he reached for the handle and tugged the cool metal, gaining access to the room only to feel fire rush through his veins at what he found waiting inside.

Morris Kessler, a corporate tycoon who owned several finance companies but also made quite a name for himself as a loan shark. When Morris caught sight of Carter, his nervous eyes narrowed and the gun clutched in his large hand lifted, extending toward the two men who stood before him.

“What the fuck, Kohen?” Carter growled.

Kohen, however, ignored him and addressed Kessler. “You have about five seconds before he shoots you. I would advise you to pull the trigger now.”

Carter was already reaching behind his back for the gun he had secured there. Kessler tugged at the trigger multiple times then his eyes flared in surprise. When Kohen stepped in front of Carter, feeling the barrel of his gun at his back, he didn’t flinch.

“The clip’s empty.”

“You fucking lied. You promised you’d deliver Reed.”
