“No.”

“You want me to fuck you hard, Kenni?”

“Yes…” She choked on the word and her eyes met his over her shoulder again.

Carter refused to deny her anything. With his dick so deep in her pussy she could have anything she wanted, so he fucked her hard.

McKenna’s head fell forward and her hands moved lower on the door, which sent her hips and ass higher. He growled in the back of his throat when she lifted onto her toes and rocked back against him each time he pushed into her depths. He began thrusting into her so hard that her arms locked to prevent her head from landing against the door but Carter didn’t stop because she moaned his name in appreciation.

He came hard, seconds after she did, then hooked an arm around her waist, yanking her against his chest. Carter felt McKenna’s heart thundering while her arms hung loosely at her sides. He kissed a trail down her neck to her shoulder and grazed it with his teeth.

Neither of them moved for a long moment then she lifted her chin to look up at Carter. “You feel better now?”

He smirked and grazed her mouth with his. “Do you?”

“Yep.”

He nuzzled her neck. “Come shower with me, then you can get some sleep.”

As McKenna entered the living room, twisting her semi damp hair into a knot on top of her head, she eyed Carter who stood near the window, one hand braced against the low, metal separation above his head while smoke seeped through his lips.

She enjoyed the lines and definition of his lean frame as she approached, trailing her fingers over his exposed skin. She dipped under his arm so her back rested against the metal framing and she faced Carter. His hooded eyes lowered to hers briefly before he turned his head and expelled a haze of smoke through his full lips then lowered them to hers. The kiss was soft, barely making contact, but she still smiled because her body reacted.

“You don’t sleep.”

“I sleep.”

“When?” She arched a brow, mentally recalling all the times she woke up in bed alone.

“When necessary.” He smiled slowly and she lifted a hand and traced the word printed on the inside of Carter’s bicep. It was hidden from normal view but since his arm was above his head, it made the tattoo eye level.

“What’s Kivuli?”

Carter tensed. He hadn’t thought about the tattoo in years. It was inked on his skin, but only as a reminder of the man he looked up to and honored.

“Shadow.”

“Huh?”

“The word means shadow. My father had the same tattoo. I got it after he died.”

Carter pulled his hand down and crossed the room to the kitchen. He would swear to the ink on his arm burning his skin with awareness. Never had he given much thought to its meaning until that very moment.

James Reed was a man of few words. He also didn’t ink his body other than the one inscription branded on the inside of his bicep. Carter remembered asking what it meant. As a kid, having a tattoo meant his father was badass, something Carter wanted for himself but now…

“Can I get one too?”

“You don’t need this, Carter. It’s who you are.”

“But you have it.” Carter’s brows bunched, his ten year old mind trying to come up with a convincing argument as to why he should be allowed to get the same thing branded on his skin.

“Only to remind me of who I am.”

“Who are you?”

“A shadow, son.”

“Then I want one too. I’m a shadow and it will remind me.” Carter believed his father hung the moon. He wanted to be just like him, everything his father was.
