“You don’t need a reminder of who you are.”

“Why not?” Carter’s brows pinched more.

“Because you have me. I will never let you forget who you are.”

James brushed a hand over Carter’s head as he grinned widely.

“You ready to talk about it?”

Carter’s eyes drifted over to McKenna who managed to enter his personal space without his awareness. His thoughts had been so heavy due to being trapped in old memories.

“Talk about what?”

“Whatever had you so tense at the party and fucking me like you needed a way to escape as soon as we got here.”

A ghost of a smile curled his lips and Carter edged closer to McKenna. His hands gripped the counter, caging her in. His mouth was so close to her ear his words vibrated down her neck. “You think that was what I was doing when I made you cum, Kenni? Trying to escape?”

“Yes, now tell me why.”

He chuckled and pushed back, leaning against the counter opposite McKenna. His stance was dominant and wide, arms folded across his bare chest, expanding and stretching the muscles that stacked his lean frame.

His gaze settled on McKenna like a pulse of pressure across her body, warming her slowly from the inside out.

“Tonight I learned something about my parents and I don’t know for sure if it’s true, but if it is, everything changes.”

“How?”

There was a hint of indifference and agitation laced in his gaze.

“It will mean they’re not who I knew them to be and I’m not who I think I am.”

And if what I learned is true, my own family’s blood will eventually be on my hands because if the person who killed my mother is not already dead, they will be soon.

“So tell me what you found out and maybe I can help decide if it’s true.”

Carter’s mood shifted to amusement.

“Why is it that you’re always trying to help me figure out my shit?”

McKenna smiled, cocky and light. “You need to ask yourself that question.”

“Why is that?”

“Because you have a very bad habit of putting me in the middle of your shit. Apparently you’re not very good at figuring things out yourself, which means someone has to.”

Carter chuckled, unfolding one arm. His hand massaged his chin while his heavy gaze bored into McKenna. “That sounds dangerously close to us being a team, Kenni. You sure you want to lean into that perception.”

She shrugged lazily. “Might as well make myself useful. I’m potentially unemployed and I’m here.”

“That you are.”

“So tell me…”

His loaded gaze turned ice cold. “The last time you wanted to help me figure out my shit, it was to expedite the process of getting me out of your house. Is that what this is?”

“Obviously not, this is your house. I can’t put you out.” She smiled smugly and Carter chuckled in acknowledgment. “Now stop avoiding the question and tell me.”

“Someone informed me that my parents were on the run from my mother’s family. They changed their names, lived off the grid, and created a new life to keep them under the radar.”
