“You can’t just flip a switch and go to sleep.”

“For you I can.”

Heat blossomed in the pit of her belly. Something so simple held so much weight. Carter was promising McKenna his commitment and loyalty through such an effortless act and she was falling deeper into his world, knowing it would be impossible to leave.

Chapter

Eight

The next morning, Carter lay beside McKenna, arms folded beneath his head, staring at the ceiling. His mind was at risk of crashing from all the thoughts he kept digging up from the past, memories that added validity to the words Kessler had thrown at him.

He was anxious and the only thing keeping him grounded was the sea of brown skin tangled over his body, weighing him down. With the softness and warmth of her curvy frame over his, the warmth of her pussy pressing against his thigh, his dick had been hard since he woke hours ago and not a typical morning wood.

Here he was, hours after he would have normally started his day, occupying the spot she forced him into last night. He was grateful for the peace it brought. Even if her presence didn’t calm the thoughts that consumed him, she made them much more tolerable.

Even now, as she shifted and moved beside him, acknowledging he would soon be free of the prison she currently held him in, he was slightly disappointed about leaving his bed.

“This is a first. I thought I would have to get used to waking up alone,” McKenna mumbled in a sleep-laced voice, inching closer to Carter. She draped an arm across his abs and snuggled closer.

“It’s kinda hard to escape when you’re all over me like this.”

She smiled against his chest and lifted her head, peering at his handsome face through half-lidded eyes while her hand moved down his abs over the swell of his briefs.

“I think you like me being all over you like this.” Her fingers grazed his dick and squeezed firmly. Carter groaned and turned his head, where he found her half-lidded stare waiting.

“If you plan on doing something other than occupying this bed, you might want to move your hand.”

His eyes darkened.

“That actually doesn’t sound like a terrible idea, but I was thinking maybe we could do something else.”

“Like?”

“Try to figure out if what the opps said about your parents was true.”

Carter stilled briefly, unfolded both arms from behind his head, and untangled his body from hers, climbing from the bed.

“Nah, I got something else in mind.”

“Does that something else include a loss of life?”

Carter was at the dresser, scrolling through his phone, so he turned to face McKenna whose eyes dropped to his waist until he began talking.

“You think that’s what happens every time I leave the house.”

“No, but that’s kinda what you do and apparently what happens every time we leave the house, so I’d appreciate clarity on where we’re going.”

“We’re going to eat.”

“That’s it?”

“For now, yes. But considering this is a date, I hope I get lucky when we get home.”

“You’re taking me on a date?” McKenna arched a brow, paired with a cocky grin.

“Don’t you think I owe you one?”

“Several, actually.”
