Nothing about him felt dire enough for someone to pay such a high price to end his existence, but that didn’t mean he didn’t deserve the fate that would ultimately claim him. Carter would get the profile from Kohen which would give him the reason why someone wanted Jorden’s life. If Carter didn’t feel the kill was worth it, he would turn Kohen down. There were a lot of questionable people in the world but not every act deserved a final call. Carter did his best to make value-based decisions as a hired gun. How fucking comical was that. He killed people for a living.

Brushing a hand down his face, he followed Alvin until he entered his condo in The Millennium complex. Carter exited his car and followed Alvin. Instead of moving to the elevators, Carter headed to the coffee shop in the lobby and placed an order. He chatted with the cashier while surveying his surroundings. There was too much movement and he located four cameras—two in the lobby, one by the elevators, and one outside the building.

If he accepted the job, he wouldn’t do it here. His best bet would be to catch Alvin before or after he left the gym. A tragic yet random robbery that ended with a fatal knife wound after Alvin was injected with an untraceable substance rendering him unable to defend himself. A quiet kill that got the job done.

Carter left with his drink, made his way back to the car, and dialed Kohen from the burner phone so the call could be untraceable.

“Aside from shitty finances, gambling, and porn habits, what’s this guy’s issue?”

“Sexual assault,” Kohen murmured.

Carter frowned. “I didn’t find a record on him. The guy’s clean.”

“You wouldn’t because there isn’t one but he’s not fucking clean. Three months ago, the guy was at a bar, drugged a woman, and put her through hell for two full days.”

“Why isn’t there a record?”

“His uncle is Chief of Police. He had a few of his guys keep the victim locked in an interrogation room for hours, questioning everything about her life. They convinced her what they were doing was only half as bad as what would happen at trial. They bullied her, scared the girl so badly she refused to press charges. Her family didn’t know what to do. They want justice the only way they can get it and not through a court system.”

“They wanna kill the guy?”

Carter didn’t give a damn. As far as he was concerned, that was justice for a piece of shit like Alvin if what Kohen was saying was true.

“He hurt her really badly. Did some really sick things. The sites he’s on should give you a good idea of the type of hell he put her through.”

“Fuck,” Carter mumbled. Alvin frequented some pretty dark shit. His mind was made up. He was taking the job.

“I’ll do it. Keep the money.”

The line was silent for a minute which had Carter asking, “Did you hear me?”

“Yeah, I heard you.”

“The uncle?”

“Not our target,” Kohen started bluntly. He already knew where Carter’s mind was going. The woman couldn’t get the justice she deserved through the court because of him.

“Doesn’t fucking matter. I’m guessing this isn’t the first time he’s covered something like this up.”

“It’s not, still not our problem. But what you do is on you, Carter. I’ll stay out of it if you decide you want to do something.”

“I didn’t think you’d get in the way. It will be handled by the end of the week.”

“Sooner the better. Just let me know when you have it all worked out.”

“I got you and before you go, don’t you have someone you trust on the federal side?”

“Federal as in FBI?”

“Yeah…”

“I do, what do you need?”

Carter brushed a hand down his face. “I’d rather not say on the phone…”

“Come to dinner. Bring McKenna. Elena’s been asking about her.”

He wasn’t surprised that Elena had fallen under McKenna’s spell. It was impossible not to. She had that type of energy you were drawn to and couldn’t deny. He damn sure couldn’t, tried and failed which was why she was at his place now.
