“When?”

“Tomorrow if that works.”

“Yeah, we can do that.”

“Good. I’ll let Elena know.”

They ended the call and Carter decided to head home to the woman he couldn’t, and didn’t want to, deny.

“Sweetheart, can you at least tell me why you decided to end things with Tevin? The decision was so random and doesn’t make any sense.”

McKenna rolled her eyes hard and dropped her head back against the lip of the massive tub. She had only been in it for five minutes before her mother called and disrupted her plan for a peaceful soak.

She was already clean from a shower but had been dying to try out the massive tub that had been tempting her since she first toured Carter’s bathroom. She also needed something to fill the time and she was over mindlessly watching TV while waiting for him to return. Wine and a bubble bath felt like an acceptable alternative.

“I’m shocked, the very grown, very established neurosurgeon didn’t provide the reason I ended things while crying to my mother about something that doesn’t concern her.”

Even with her eyes closed, McKenna sensed him. The energy shifted and the space felt tight and too confined to contain the man she found herself addicted to. Regardless of her annoyance with the topic of conversation she was having with her mother, his presence brought a smile to her face. However McKenna’s eyes remained closed while her body was submerged in the steamy, sudsy water. Her fingers grazed over her thighs but she curled them into fists to stop any further exploration.

“Don’t be flippant, McKenna Janise.”

Her eyes shot open and landed on the device positioned on the beveled edge of the tub then lifted to Carter whose intense stare burned through her before he yanked his shirt over his head.

“I’m not being flippant. I’m being a grown ass woman who doesn’t want to be reprimanded by her mother because she decided the man she was involved with is no longer a good fit.”

“You are grown, sweetheart, and very much able to make decisions about your life. I’m not reprimanding you for doing so, I’m only asking for clarity.”

“Tevin couldn’t provide you clarity while he was crying on your line?”

She wasn’t the least bit surprised he’d left out the part about Carter. That would mean admitting there was another man he couldn’t compete with, one McKenna had chosen over him.

Pussy.

“He wasn’t crying, McKenna, but he was clearly upset about your rash decision. He also had no idea why you ended things, so I’m asking.”

The entire time McKenna spoke to her mother, she kept her eyes on Carter, who remained scarily calm while he removed his clothes. Once she had access to every inch of his tempting body, he stepped into the tub and slowly sank into the opposite end.

His massive frame fit cozily with hers but she still felt his overwhelming presence when his hands moved to her hips and yanked her to him. She shifted and adjusted, placing her legs around his waist. His dick pressed into her, causing McKenna’s stomach to clench.

“We don’t work. You wanted me to try, I did. Tevin wanted a trophy wife. I’m not that. He was using me to play a part.”

“A part?”

“Dutiful wife.”

“Don’t you want to be a wife?”

“Yes, but not to a man that doesn’t value me as one.”

Carter’s fingers moved over her skin, up her spine and back down over her thighs. Then his palm was at the base of her neck while he kissed down her jaw. McKenna fought hard to suppress the moan that crept up her throat.

“Are you sure you’re not just being dramatic?”

“What I’m sure of is that he and I don’t work. I need you to accept that and stop entertaining him. When I find the man who wants to marry me for the right reasons, then you’ll be the first call I make. But I can promise you it won’t be Tevin. I love you and I have to go.”

McKenna listened to her mother sigh while Carter grazed the column of her throat with his teeth.

“If you’re sure…”
