“Now?” She arched a brow and smiled slowly when he nodded with an intense look on his face.

“Too many to discuss but the most important one is because he can’t see life without me and he doesn’t want a life without me.”

“Then after we finish what we’re doing, you should call your mother back.”

“Why?”

He smirked and thrusted upward. McKenna’s teeth grazed her lip while her lids fluttered. “Lifeline, Kenni. You’re mine.”

I can’t fucking live without you and I don’t want to.

“Carter Reed?” McKenna couldn’t read the expression of the man who greeted them at the door, but if she wasn’t mistaken, his tone wasn’t pleasant which had her inching closer to Carter.

“You seem surprised to see me here.” Carter spoke with amusement at the not so welcoming greeting Kades delivered.

McKenna noticed the man offered a barely noticeable smile that softened his features. It was then that she realized he had the same eyes and stature of another Corvidae, Emir.

“Nothing about you surprises me, Reed. My dad’s in his office and my mother…”

“Is right here. Are you harassing our guests, Kades?”

McKenna noticed a full genuine smile ease onto Kades’ face that contradicted the one he exposed moments before. When Elena was at his side, he kissed her cheek. “Not at all, I don’t want no shit from you.”

She gave him a warning look and he chuckled but ignored her, extending a hand to Carter.

“Welcome to the team.”

When his eyes landed on McKenna, she smiled but didn’t speak. Nor did he address her, instead stepped around them, reaching for the door.

“You’re leaving?”

“Yeah, Ma. Got plans.”

“I’m sure you do.” McKenna smirked at the sarcasm lacing Elena’s tone.

After Kades left, Elena focused on McKenna. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Thank you for inviting us, your home is beautiful.” McKenna’s eyes did a slow perusal.

“I’ll take you on a tour while the staff finishes getting dinner ready for us. Carter…” She motioned to the hallway. “Kohen’s waiting for you in his office.”

When his eyes landed on McKenna she offered a small smile, ensuring she was fine. Elena rolled her eyes. “I’m not the enemy. This lovely woman is safe with me, Carter. Go.”

He chuckled, kissed McKenna on the cheek, and left them in the foyer.

“Come.” Elena looped her arm through McKenna’s and guided her to the left side of the home. “These men of ours act like we can’t inhale if they don’t exhale for us.”

McKenna smiled at the amusement and annoyance in her voice.

“Is it bad that I like how protective he is?”

“Absolutely not. It’s the best part of being with a man who truly loves and respects you.”

They toured all three levels of the massive home and McKenna was in awe of how beautiful the space was. The interior was similar to a modern castle with its intricate details and beautiful custom designs. There were crows and the letter C engraved over the entrances of each hall, on the massive double doors that closed off the ballrooms and dining areas, and embossed on the marble floors. It was tastefully done and very prestigious.
