“Kept what?” McKenna walked to the bed and yanked the comforter free, but Carter caught her wrist to prevent her from moving forward.

“That phone.”

“What are you talking about? Didn’t you just leave that? It’s why you’re here right? Another mysterious call where you remind me that I can’t have you.”

“I left one two days ago, Kenni.” Fuck. “I didn’t put that there tonight.”

“Neither did I…” she mumbled, then her eyes shot up to Carter’s.

“What is going on? Was it Brooks? Did you two fall out? Shit, is he watching me?”

“No, it wasn’t Brooks. Pack, Kenni, we’re leaving.”

Carter lifted the phone, flipped it open, and powered it on. There was a message waiting. One he hadn’t sent.

You fuck with me, I fuck with you. Let this go Carter or it doesn’t end well for you or her.

“I told you I’m not going anywhere. So either tell me what’s going on or you can leave.”

“Kenni, pack your shit, now.”

He held the phone to her face so she could see the message. Her eyes narrowed then went wide.

“You said the phone was off,” fumbled clumsily from her lips. “That I couldn’t call you?—”

“It was.”

Carter was well aware that the people he dealt with had access, resources. One person came to mind. Lynx. Carter would be paying him a visit soon. It wouldn’t have taken much to tap into a line, temporarily connect service, and send a text. He noticed the icon on the screen now showed there was no longer service available. That was intentional. They’d proved their point. They had access to McKenna.

“Who sent that? How?”

“I don’t know.”

He had a good idea but wouldn’t tell her that at the moment. He needed her to pack her shit so they could leave. The less conversation preventing their departure, the better.

“What do you mean you don’t know. Her. Are they talking about me? Is someone threatening me?”

“I mean I don’t fucking know. I have an idea, but I can’t get to him because he ran like a gotdamn coward. I’ll figure it out but for now, you’re with me. Pack.”

“Carter…”

“Pack, McKenna.”

Carter slammed the phone shut and tossed it on the bed. He left McKenna in her room to grab what she could. She had fifteen minutes. While she yanked on sweat bottoms and a hoodie, he stepped into the hallway to make a call. Brooks answered on the second ring.

“Yeah?”

“Jessup knows about McKenna.”

“How?”

“I don’t fucking know for sure but I’m guessing he had someone follow me. I fucked up.”

Because I couldn’t let her go when I knew I should have.

“She good?”

“Yeah, she’s good. I’m bringing her with me.”
