Kohen nodded. “Gatete Uwera is rumored to be the nucleus of the operation.”

“Is he?”

“In my opinion, yes, but I can’t say for certain. He’s known for recruiting young men, boys, from East Africa to train, turn into machines. Soldiers in his army. I assume the best of those recruits become part of the Angels of Death. The others, likely just guns for hire and muscle used however he sees fit, but again, all rumored. I can’t confirm any of this myself. No one knows for certain. No one talks about the Angels of Death. Discussing them leads to missing persons reports and gruesome deaths. That much I have witnessed. I’ve seen one of those coins before. It was years ago and an entire bloodline was erased, which is why no one truly knows if what’s rumored about Gatete being the leader is factual.”

“East Africa?” Carter’s brows pinched. “What if my father was one of those recruits?”

“That’s a possibility.”

“I need to know.”

“I’ll do what I can to find out more. You stay the fuck away from it. No more questions, Carter.”

When Carter’s dark gaze fell on Kohen, he exhaled a sigh, feeling the fight growing from across the room. “I can navigate in ways that you can’t. If you’re going on this suicide mission, you don’t want them knowing before you’re fully prepared. Let me help.”

“I’m not asking you to put your family at risk, Kohen.”

“You are my family. We made a deal. Too fucking late to place stipulations on what family means. I’m a man of my word.”

Carter nodded stiffly.

“Now, leave this here for the moment. We have two very beautiful women who are likely a few bottles in and annoyed that we’re discussing business and not making them the center of our focus. Let’s go.”

“She likes to tell that story….” McKenna grinned as she watched the loving way Kohen stared at his wife. She was tucked at his side, her hand resting on his thigh. One of his arms was draped over the back of the sofa, the other stretched over the armrest beside him. He held a glass of cognac. “But she only ever tells her version of the story.”

“My version is the only one that matters because it’s the truth. Yours involves saving that very fragile ego of yours, sweetheart.”

Kohen chuckled and lifted his glass. Once it was resting on the arm of the sofa again, he noted, “She accepted my dinner invitation, as per my lovely wife, because she was a broke college student and I was offering a free meal, but…” His eyes lowered to hers and he smiled handsomely. “What she neglected to say was she also accepted because I had the attention of several other women on campus that day. Many of whom let it be known that had she not accepted, they would be more than willing to take her place.”

McKenna’s eyes flashed with amusement when they landed on Elena who snorted her disapproval with a smile in place. “My husband is and has always been very charming. Of course he had their noses wide open but that had nothing to do with my decision. They wouldn’t have held his attention for long because he wanted me.”

“True, but their interest did help drive your decision to ensure they didn’t have an opportunity to be on my radar.”

Elena rolled her eyes gently but her beautiful smile remained intact.

“What’s your story?” she asked McKenna before her curious gaze lifted to Carter. “There has to be one because I can’t imagine you bumped into each other at the grocery store or in a coffee shop. What dramatic thing did he do to get your attention?”

Carter barked a laugh. “Why the fuck would it have to be dramatic?”

“Nothing is simple with men like you and Kohen. You can’t simply ask a woman out in casual conversation. Doing so is not your style.”

“He broke into my house and demanded I help him with a gunshot wound.”

“See, I knew there was a story. Tell me more.” Elena smiled, focusing on McKenna. “You must be a nurse?”

“Nope…” She lifted her eyes to Carter, who was seated on the arm of her chair, and her body relaxed, leaning toward him. “I’m an admin. Paper pusher but we wear scrubs similar to the nurses. He assumed I was.”

“At least you didn’t kill him,” Kohen added with amusement.

“She works at a hospital and was searching how not to kill someone you’re treating for a gunshot wound.”

McKenna laughed and shoved Carter’s leg. “I was not and I didn’t kill you.”

“You damn sure tried though.”

“Yet here you are,” Elena stated while her eyes bounced between the two of them.

“Here we are.” McKenna’s narrowed stare lifted to Carter and he gripped her chin and landed a kiss. She blushed, cutting her eyes toward Kohen and Elena.
