“Who lives here?”

“Ghosts and lies,” he murmured before he turned, extended an arm across the car, and gently stroked her cheek. “Come on.”

They exited the vehicle and Carter led them to a side entrance where he keyed a code that led them inside a small kitchen. He flicked a light on, which emitted a warm glow instead of an overbearing brightness.

The space was painted pale blue with accents of white. The cabinetry was old but maintained and the counters were bare. Understanding seeped in.

“This was your house?” McKenna’s brows pinched as her eyes bounced around the vacant space. “Where you lived with your parents?”

She wasn’t sure why she asked, other than the feeling of awareness that crept up her spine. The energy around them felt heavy and overbearing in the small space.

“Yeah, I haven’t been here in years. Shit, I don’t remember the last time.” He spoke with a dazed look before his heavy gaze was on her.

“Why tonight?”

“My mother’s family is who killed her…”

He watched McKenna intently. He wanted to see her reaction. He was communicating that he needed to do something about it and doing so was dangerous. McKenna felt what he was offering, openness and answers that extended beyond a need to know situation. He was letting her in.

“Okay…”

His brows slammed inward. Calmly and carefully he watched her, with the understanding that she was offering acceptance. McKenna was communicating that she understood, accepting his invitation to fall deeper into the darkness with him.

Carter crossed the small space and put a hand to her face. She leaned into the warmth of his palm, drowning in the thickness of emotions engulfing them, and swallowed thickly when his thumb brushed over her lips. His heavy gaze fell on her face. He didn’t say a word, but the harshness of his expression and the tension in his shoulders spoke loudly.

His emotions were dark and weighted.

McKenna moved into his space, against his body, and lifted onto her toes, testing him with a kiss. It was soft and timid, but then she felt the heat from his palm at the back of her neck just before his tongue pushed between her lips.

Her nipples were instantly hard against the firmness of his chest. Her heartbeat thumped and drummed between her ears to the same pulse that thumped between her legs. When he moved his face down her neck, kissing a slow, warm trail over her throat, she lifted her chin, allowing more access, and fisted the soft cotton material of his shirt, using it to ground her.

“I need to know that you won’t run, even though you should. I’m not what you fucking need, Kenni. I’m not what anyone needs so tell me you won’t run.”

“I won’t,” she rushed out in a breathy tone, followed by a moan when his hand moved under her dress.

“I’m gonna empty a clip in whoever killed my mother,” he stated quietly as his fingers gripped and yanked the material of her thong. She felt it slide down her thighs. The tickle of the soft material sent a shiver through her body.

“You should.”

Carter walked McKenna back and lifted her onto the counter. His dick pressed into the inside of her thigh until she gently pushed him away and slowly tugged his belt free to unfasten his jeans.

He’d just promised to kill someone and she was consumed with the need to have him all over her, inside and out. Carter’s presence consumed her to the extent that she couldn’t feel the separation between the two of them most of the time.

His lips were on hers again, his hands on her ass, and he pressed into her slowly, pulling McKenna to the edge of the counter where he met her with a deep, intentional thrust. That dark gaze narrowed and she released a shaky breath.

“I won’t run,” she confessed again and his expression shifted darker.

“There’s no running from me.” His face moved closer to hers while his body remained incredibly still. “But I care enough about you to let you leave, if that’s really what you want.”

“It’s not.”

I couldn’t.

Then he fucked her hard. Each thrust was sharp and deep, warming every inch of McKenna’s body. Her head dropped back and her palms pressed into the counter to absorb the impact but each time his pelvis ground into hers, brushing her clit, her body grew weak.

The orgasm was violent and hard. It exploded through every inch of her body with an immediate release. When she came down, it was to his mouth on her neck, her chin, her lips, while his fingers tangled in her hair. Her legs wrapped around his waist, holding him hostage, and she felt the dominance of him everywhere.

When she had his eyes again, he stared at her with an intimacy that felt overwhelming and raw. Then his mask was on again, confident and controlled as he stepped away and slowly eased out of her. After he fixed himself, he lifted McKenna off the counter, cuffed her cheeks in his large hands, and kissed the top of her head.
