“That too.”

“You asked…” Carter narrowed his eyes at Kohen. He placed himself in harm’s way for him.

“I had something they wanted, they had something I wanted.”

“Had to be pretty important if AOD is as protected as you say.”

“It was, but that’s for me to worry about. Just know you’re not attached to this, so whatever decision you make won’t lead anyone to you.” Kohen delivered a look that demanded Carter leave it alone.

“You know where he is?”

“Yes, but before you…”

“I don’t give a fuck what you have to say about it, Kohen, and I’m not asking you to stand by me on this.”

Carter understood the ramifications of taking on a man like Gatete, family or not, and by default, a group as notably dangerous as the Angels of Death. He wouldn’t ask Kohen to risk himself or his family.

“No, you’re not but I’m telling you I’m going to.” The two men glared at one another in a heated challenge of dominance until Kohen added, “I know what this means to you, but you’re one man, Carter.”

The look of arrogance Carter delivered had Kohen adding, “I don’t give a damn how good you are, it’s suicide to go into something like this alone. I’m offering my help.”

“You haven’t been out there in years, Kohen.”

Kohen shrugged nonchalantly. “I haven’t, which is why I discussed it with Kades, Emir, and Yair. They’ve agreed to do this with you. Yair is good with surveillance, he can be your eyes and ears while you’re out there. Emir and Kades are capable, Carter, and more than that, you can trust them.”

“You’re willing to put them in the middle of this?”

“With your leadership, yes. Just because you’re better doesn’t mean they can’t handle their own. You go in as a team and you’ll come home as a team.”

Carter smiled and nodded. Kohen was slightly offended that Carter was always asserting the Corvidae offspring still had a lot to learn. “They’re your sons, Kohen. You trained them, they can definitely hold their own.”

“Then we have a deal?”

“Deal?” Carter frowned.

“I’m not sending you to dance with the devil alone. You want to know where to find Gatete, you agree to my terms. You do this with Kades, Emir, and Yair. Before you let your ego get in the way, I’m not demanding, I’m asking. I respected your father. He and your mother both deserve this, but not at the expense of something happening to you. They kept you a secret for this very reason. They didn’t want you anywhere near this shit. I can’t dishonor their wishes without doing everything in my power to know that their efforts weren’t in vain.”

By me dying.

Carter removed one hand from his pocket and neared Kohen, offering an open palm. Kohen stood and sealed the deal.

Chapter

Eleven

“Ithought this was a date?”

“It is…” Carter stepped around McKenna and pulled the door open so they could enter Loyd Recreational Center. “Half of it anyway.”

“Here?” She glanced around, then frowned at Carter. “Wait, if you tell me we’re here to see your mystery child in a rec basketball game I’m gonna fucking murder you.”

Carter eased in front of McKenna and grinned. She hated how devastatingly handsome he was at the moment, in his dark gray button up with the sleeves rolled exposing his forearms, black jeans, and special edition 1s from a recent collaboration by Kameron Tyler. The single platinum Cuban chain that laid flat around his neck matched the bracelet on his arm, adding a certain level of classic edge he presented so sexily. Thanks to the fresh cut he was sporting, Carter looked so fucking good she would hate to murder such a fine specimen of a man but would.

“If I had a child, you would murder me? Leaving that child fatherless?”

She narrowed her eyes. “Don’t try to use the kid for sympathy. Why are we here?”

“You paid a quarter of a mil for a painting and the artist is here to personally hand it over to the new owner. I don’t have a kid…” His eyes raked down her body. “Yet.”
