McKenna’s uterus sang its approval with the insinuation. She arched a brow as Carter slipped his hand in hers and pulled McKenna into his side. “Come on.”

They traveled through the rec center, asking for directions from the woman at the desk, and stepped into the art room moments later. There were a handful of kids inside, along with their parents, instructors, and a man Mckenna couldn’t help but admire. He was devilishly handsome and the infant he had propped on his shoulder only added to the attraction.

“Who’s that?”

“Ezekiel Omari. The man you donated my money to, so stop eye fucking him before there is a fatherless child out here in the world.”

McKenna’s eyes shot up to Carter’s, laced with amusement. His expression was stern but she issued a warning glare at his irrational threat.

“I wasn’t eye fucking him. I’m all yours, Mr. Reed. Don’t let your insecurities get you in trouble.”

“You don’t let your roaming eyes get him in trouble,” he warned with a dangerous smile and she grinned, lifting onto her toes to deliver a kiss he extended by hooking an arm around her waist and holding McKenna to him for a few seconds longer than she intended.

“Hi, I’m Me’ah, the art instructor for the rec center. You must be one of the auction winners.”

McKenna eased away from Carter and offered her a bright smile. Carter stepped behind her, slipping his hands into his pockets, protectively allowing his chest to graze McKenna’s back. “We are.”

“Then let me first say thank you. Donations are a huge part of how we educate and advance the skills of our little creatives. Community support means the world to us. Who knows, we may have the next Genesis Montclair amongst us.”

McKenna noticed how her eyes smiled proudly as she scanned the faces of the kids in the room.

“Who knows,” McKenna offered with confidence. “It’s very possible.”

Me’ah nodded. “The pieces that were purchased are placed at the kids’ stations. Find yours and if you don’t mind, we’d like to get a picture of you with the artist and the piece you purchased for our donation wall.”

“Ohh, I get to take a picture with a celebrity,” McKenna teased and Me’ah offered a huge smile.

“Indeed you do. If I can help you with anything, please let me know. Feel free to enjoy some of the other pieces on display as well.”

“We will.”

Carter grunted as the woman walked off. McKenna turned to him with a teasing grin. “This date is getting better by the minute. You might actually get lucky.”

“But you won’t if you try to spend another quarter mil on some ugly ass paint splatters.”

“Carter,” she blurted through a laugh and swatted his arm. “They’re not ugly.”

His eyes roamed the room before landing on her again. “Don’t try to defend this shit, Kenni. You know it’s not good, but they're for a good cause so I’m not gonna complain. The money helps them pay for classes and these kids need all the help they can get. You don’t even know what that shit is.”

“I do. It’s a flower,” she defended, in reference to the painting she’d bid on and won.

“Nah, that’s not a flower. Disorganized blobs of paint smeared together.”

She rolled her eyes. “You’re terrible. They’re kids and the paintings are cute.”

“The shit ain’t cute when it hits my pockets like that.” He smiled and pulled her into him by her waist. “But they can get that since it’s you running up the tab.”

“Such a sweetheart.”

Carter chuckled. “I told you not to expect a soft side from me, Kenni.”

“You were the highest bidder for the auction.” A deep voice cut through their conversation and McKenna grinned, watching as a strikingly beautiful woman took possession of the infant Ezekiel Omari had been holding. Ezekiel edged closer, glancing at Carter first, then McKenna.

“Yeah?” She beamed proudly.

“You were. Which is why I wanted to personally thank you both.”

“Thank him, I spent his money,” she said, moving closer to the woman and the baby, leaving Carter with Ezekiel.
