She lifted her head and peered up at him. “Unless you don’t want me to…”

“Then I will.” She lowered her head on his chest again and added, “But you’re going to have to marry me. I’m not the baby mama type.”
The vibration of his laugh rattled between them.
“Don’t laugh. I’m serious.”
“I know.” He was silent for a minute. “Tell me when and we’ll do it.”
“Do what?”
“Get married.”
“You want me to ask you?”
“Fuck no. I’m just saying, tell me when you’re ready and we’ll do it.”
“What about when you’re ready?”
“I’m ready now, Kenni. Giving you my last name is just a formality. Just like this pussy is mine, the woman it’s attached to is too.”
“God, you really do suck at the romantic stuff.”
He laughed again and she stroked her fingers down the length of his arm. “I don’t know shit about that, but I’ll work on it.”
“No, you won’t.”
He smirked. “Nah, I won’t but that’s not what you need from me.”
“What makes you say that?”
“You know me and you’re here, which means I’m good enough how I am.”
She grinned against his chest. “Unfortunately, you’re right and you are good enough.”
“You wanted to know about my parents?”
“I do,” she said quietly.
“They were happy. He loved her, she loved him, they loved me. It worked. No matter what was happening on the outside of their lives, together they worked. This will work for us. I’ll do everything in my fucking power to make sure it does.”
“Me too.”
Carter was quiet again before he admitted the thing that had been weighing heavily on his mind since receiving confirmation from Kohen.
“I’m going to Texas soon.”
