“They are.” He watched her intently and McKenna nodded with a frown marring her pretty face.

“They don’t have evidence…”

Carter shook his head and she asked, “Will they?”

He shook his head again.

“How do you know for sure?”

“I’m good at what I do.”

“There is no perfect murder, Carter.”

“If I’m committing it, there is.” He smirked and she frowned deeper.

“I want to be angry but I know I can’t. It’s a joke to you but it’s really not funny. The police are looking for you.”

They have been for years but they will never catch me.

“It’s not a joke, Kenni. You can be angry but you can’t worry. There are very few guarantees in life, but this is one I can promise you. They’ll never know it’s me. There are a million things you could worry about, but the authorities showing up and charging me with murder isn’t and won’t ever be one of those things.”

“Promise…”

“I promise.” He cuffed her face and lowered his so their eyes were level.

She exhaled a huff. “The Ammo Killer is a stupid name, by the way. Not sexy at all. And you’re very sexy.”

Carter laughed and shook his head. “They don’t want me to be sexy, Kenni. They want me in jail.”

She tensed and he brushed a knuckle down her cheek. “It won’t happen. You don’t have to worry.”

“If it does, I’ll kill you myself before they can put you in jail.” She narrowed her eyes and shoved a finger into his chest before storming into the closet. Carter watched with amusement, shaking his head once more.

And I’d let you do it because life without you is no longer an option.

By eight McKenna was exploring the suite they checked into while Carter was across the hall working out details with Kades, Yair, and Emir. None of them spoke much on the flight. Emir and Kades slept, Yair spent the entire flight on his laptop, and Carter sat quietly beside her. Even though she was tucked at his side the entire time, with his fingers mindlessly stroking over her thigh, he felt miles away. McKenna allowed him the space to deal with his thoughts.

After her tour, she stood in the center of the lounge area of their suite and grinned when she heard someone enter the room. She turned to find Carter with a phone to his ear. His eyes immediately landed on her as he continued speaking to whoever the caller was. He moved right to her, dropping a kiss before he winked and walked into the separate bedroom.

She settled on the sofa, crossing her legs Indian style, and began swiping through her social media feed when a call came through that she almost didn’t answer.

“Hey, Julie.” McKenna greeted her boss in a neutral tone.

“McKenna, hi. I apologize for calling so late. I’ve been meaning to call for a few days now but we’ve been swamped.”

This was her passive aggressive way of denoting that McKenna had left her understaffed with her leave.

“It’s fine, what can I do for you?” McKenna asked, lifting her eyes when she felt a presence shadowing her.

“I just wanted to make sure you’ll be returning next week. It’s been a nightmare juggling schedules but I’ve managed.”

More like it’s been a nightmare dealing with employees who refuse to show up and work the way that I have, consistently over the years without complaining.

“I’m sure it has been and yes, I’ll be returning next week.” Her eyes slowly fastened to Carter’s, gauging his reaction. His expression remained neutral. They hadn’t discussed her returning to work but he had mentioned that she was no longer in any immediate danger.

“Oh, God, thank you. I’m glad to hear that. Okay perfect, I won't hold you then. I’ll go ahead and get you on the schedule.”

“Yep, I’ll see you next week,” McKenna mumbled and ended the call.
