“Nobody knows who they are, Mir. These muthafuckers are hiding in plain sight,” Kades offered and added, “Why would they feel the need to lock this place down? On paper this compound is a training facility. Nothing illegal about that and no one is connecting this to AOD.”

“That ego is a muthafucker,” Emir mumbled as they all got out of the Jeep. He rounded the front, holding his rifle against his thigh when he added, “And shit, the feds know who they are.”

“Yeah they do but they’re also in each other’s pockets. Why the fuck would they care about the feds pulling up? If they do, it’s to broker a business deal.”

“Right.” Emir glanced at the compound. They had a half-mile walk to the perimeter. The plan was to take down the two gunmen at the rear. Kades would stand guard while Carter and Emir entered the main quarters from the ground level deck, took care of Gatete, then they would be on a jet back to Crescent Falls with everything about their visit to Texas being erased.

“Let’s go and whoever takes the shot, don’t fucking miss,” Carter stated, walking away. Emir and Kades fell in step behind him. In just under ten minutes they reached the perimeter of the compound, with Emir checking one last time before they crossed the area guarded by the laser security.

“You sure you shut that shit down?” he asked his brother and seconds later Yair’s voice filled their earpieces in a pompous tone.

“You don’t trust me, Mir?”

“Yeah, I trust you, but everybody fucks up. Double check to make sure we don’t move and set off an alarm.”

“It’s disabled. You just make sure you don’t fucking miss your target so Carter doesn’t have two reasons to shoot you.”

Carter smirked and pointed to the left. “I got him.”

“Bet, I got the other one.” Emir kneeled and lifted his rifle.

Carter was no longer focused on the brothers. He held his weapon steady, peering through the scope. With years of training, he managed to keep his body incredibly still. Everything around him faded, leaving just him and the guard he needed to take down. He would only get one shot because if he missed, their cover was blown.

His finger slowly moved back on the trigger, and after exhaling a slow breath, he smoothly yanked it back. One bullet straight to the head. The guard dropped and Carter lowered his rifle, sporting a cocky grin. By the time he handed it off to Kades, Emir dropped the second guard.

“Damn, I thought I was gonna have to make the shot for you, Mir. What happened, you got scared?” Kades goaded.

“Fuck you. Precision and skill. You can’t rush greatness, which is why my shot is better than yours.”

Kades didn’t respond because movement to their left caught his eye.

“What the fuck are you doing?”

Carter ignored them both, taking his earpiece out. He tossed it to the ground and was on the move. What happened inside would be private. He didn’t want an audience but removing the device meant going in blind. No one could communicate with him or warn Carter if there was an issue. It was a risk he would take.

Kades’ question temporarily paused Carter’s steps and he turned back to them. “Exactly what I came for. Stay here. Twenty minutes. That’s all you give me. If I’m not out by then, you fucking leave. No hero shit. You leave, understood?”

“Nah, fuck that. We’re not here to watch, Carter.” Emir shook his head to disagree but Carter stalked back to him, glowering with a narrowed stare.

“You’re here to follow my orders. You’re not going in. Do not, under any circumstances, bring your ass any further than where you are right now or I’m gonna have to explain to your father why the fuck I was the one who shot you for disobeying my orders.”

Emir’s jaw flexed but he tossed his chin. “Bet. You want to do this solo, then ball the fuck out. But if you’re not out here in twenty minutes I’ll be the one explaining to my father why I was the one who saved your ass because you went on a suicide mission when you didn’t have to. Twenty minutes or I’m coming in there.”

Carter wanted to argue but Emir was so much like him. It was why he respected Emir so much. Instead of arguing, he walked away. Just like Yair promised, Carter was able to enter the compound with ease, undetected after he cleared the low bearing wall attached to the balcony near the main quarters.

A sliding door granted him entry and from where Carter stood, he could see a massive bed on the opposite side of the room. There was a lone body lying prone on the left side. Fire pushed through Carter’s veins with the thought of finally having answers. He removed the 45 Tactical from behind his back and placed his gloved hand flat on the glass door, carefully sliding it to the right. It glided with ease, placing him one step closer and he slowly moved inside, walked to the bed, and placed the gun to the forehead of the man sleeping there.

His breathing remained even but Carter noted the moment Gatete woke, realizing he was no longer alone. A slight slip in his exhale most would have missed.

“I wonder if this is how my mother felt the day someone pulled up on her and placed a gun to her head. I wonder if she had the same thoughts you’re having right now.”

“And what are my thoughts?” Even with the barrel of Carter’s gun pressed to his forehead, Gatete didn’t move a muscle and his voice remained calm and even.

“Fear and betrayal.”

Fear of losing her life and the betrayal of knowing someone had sent a gunman to take it.

Gatete opened his eyes but didn’t move. Both of his hands rested on his exposed chest since the bedding was folded near his waist. He narrowed his stare at Carter for a long moment before he spoke again.
