“How should I relax, Kenni…” He smiled arrogantly.

“Sit down.” She pointed to the bed and his smile expanded.

“You sure that’s what you want? You do remember what happened the last time we shared a bed, don’t you?”

“We won’t be doing any of that. I’m only saying, maybe I should stay somewhere else, so you can be comfortable in your own home. Unlike you, I’m a better guest so I don’t mind.”

He laughed lightly at the dig about him not giving a damn that he’d made McKenna uncomfortable when he barged into her life months ago. “I mind. I’m fine with you here. You’re overthinking.”

“It’s hard not to when it comes to you, Carter. You’re complicated,” she mumbled, yawning. “The people who don’t like you apparently don’t like me.”

The day had been extremely long and exhausting. Carter reentering her life had mentally and physically drained McKenna.

“I’m only as complicated as you want me to be.”

He walked to the nightstand near the bed, pulled the drawer open, and removed a phone which he powered on. He placed it on the sleek wood surface and motioned to it with his forehead.

“If you need anything, use that to call Brooks.”

“Why Brooks?”

“I have something I need to take care of. He’s across the hall and can get whatever you need. No one has access to this floor but us which means no one has access to you.” His eyes shifted to hers.

“There are groceries if you want to cook. If not, tell Brooks what you want to eat and he’ll get it.”

McKenna frowned at Carter who stared back intently, studying and gauging. He was aware she wasn’t happy about him leaving. “Where are you going?”

“Out, I don’t know how long I’ll be…”

“Carter…”

He exhaled a sigh. “Kenni, don’t argue. We have a lot to discuss, and we will, but not right now. I have somewhere to be.”

As Carter spoke, McKenna focused on his bare chest until she realized she was distracted. He was dressed from the waist down with a shirt draped over his right shoulder.

“Is this what life looks like for us? If I choose to stay.”

Choose to stay.

He kept his composure as he pulled a long-sleeved, black tee from his shoulder and over his head. He didn’t speak right away. The last thing Carter wanted was an argument with Kenni before he left tonight.

“Carter…”

“I heard you, McKenna.” He turned to face her, angling his head to the side when his eyes met hers.

“Then answer me.”

“Yes, this is what life looks like for us. This…” He paused and stepped closer. “Is what I do.”

“And you want me here for what?”

Carter walked to the bed and he grazed her cheek with a knuckle. “Because this is where you belong?”

“Not if you think you’re going to climb in and out of my bed when you find time to remember I exist.”

He smirked and gripped the back of her neck. “I’m well aware you exist. Not something I can fucking forget.”

She was in his head, pulsing beneath his skin, every fucking second of every day and had been since the first time he felt her lips on his.
