He forced his way into her home and she forced her way into his heart.

She owns that muthafucker.

One woman had changed Carter’s perspective on everything. He wanted her as a wife, to be the mother of his children, to be the one reason everything felt right in his world. This was something he had known since the day he walked away from her months ago but now, no matter what, he was going to guarantee there were no outs with either of them.

She’s gonna be my fucking wife.

Carter silently made his way to the bedroom and stood over McKenna while she slept peacefully. He smiled at the crown of her head being the only thing visible because she was burrowed so deeply beneath the bedding. The urge to wake her with his tongue was so strong that he was seconds away from peeling the bedding back and burying his face between her thighs. But he was too fucking exhausted and only had a few hours before he needed to be out of the house again. The past couple of weeks had been a lot, so instead he stripped out of his clothes, showered, and climbed in bed with the ring he purchased for McKenna months ago curled into his palm.

He yanked her into his chest and draped his arm around her waist, nuzzling his face in the curve of her neck. She shifted and sighed in contentment. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too.” He kissed her shoulder and guided her closer. A few minutes passed and Carter felt her breathing level again so he reached for her left hand, slid the diamond on her finger, and softly pressed a kiss to her knuckle before his eyes closed and his breathing fell in sync with hers.

No more walking away, for either of us.

McKenna grinned at the ring on her finger as she began pecking at the keyboard at her station so she could clock out. When she woke this morning to an empty bed, the light scent of Carter’s cologne and the ruffled sheets on his side of the bed were proof that he had been there.

She vaguely remembered him getting in bed with her, tugging her into his embrace, then drifting back to sleep but what she hadn’t remembered was the moment he placed a ring on her finger. The most beautiful ring she had ever seen in her life. Maybe she was biased because it was a gift and promise from the man who stole her heart, but she was in love with the platinum setting that held a round-cut floating diamond and a band with engraved butterflies on each side.

Another smile broke out on her face as she glanced down once more before logging out of the system. She pulled up her phone and checked to see if she’d received a response to the message she sent that morning and noticed it was still unread.

McKenna: I thought the deal was me telling you when I was ready.

Carter often reminded her that when he was working he didn’t keep a phone on him, but at some point he would get back to her. However, she’d sent the text at five in the morning when she awakened to find the ring on her finger. After working an entire twelve-hour shift she still didn’t have a response which created a wave of panic. So she sent a follow up text.

McKenna: ??

Seconds passed and a text came through that settled her anxieties.

Carter: What’s up?

She quickly typed a reply.

McKenna: Did you see my text?

Carter: Just did.

McKenna: You didn’t answer.

Carter: My bad. I’ve been a little busy today and that was our deal but you took too damn long.

Her smile was back.

McKenna: Waking up with a ring on my finger feels a little too much like you exposing a soft side.

Carter: Maybe that’s just me making sure you don’t drag this shit out, now stop texting me and bring your ass home so we can celebrate.

McKenna: What makes you think I’ll say yes?

Carter: Because the only other answer is no and you damn sure won’t be telling me no. Bring your ass home, Kenni.

She rolled her eyes and smiled wider.

McKenna: OTW

“You stay grinning at that damn phone. I swear that man got your nose wide open.” McKenna locked her phone and slipped the device into her pocket, pulling the drawer open to get her wristlet and the key fob to Carter’s Aston Martin she had been driving since staying at his place.

“And you stay showing up to work late. That’s why you’re still on night shift, booski.” She flashed a sugary sweet smile to Drea who rolled her eyes.
