“Lift your head, Kenni. Never walk into places like this without being aware of your surroundings.”

She paused her steps. Her brows pinched and eventually surprised eyes landed on Carter who was surrounded by multiple clusters of black balloons. He looked dangerously handsome in all black—stance wide, arms locked across his chest, chin slightly lowered, and eyes fixed on her. McKenna’s pulse quickened and her stomach knotted from the rush of being close to her man.

“You wouldn’t let anyone touch me.”

He chuckled and his eyes darkened. “Nah, I wouldn’t. But that doesn’t mean I want you out here flying blind.”

“Speaking of out here, this is a surprise?”

Her eyes left him and she noticed there were twelve other bodies present. Six men and women boxing Carter in, all holding black glass containers the size of basketballs.

“I told you to bring your ass home and you were taking too long.”

She grinned and made her way to him. The minute she was within reach, he hooked an arm around her waist and pulled her into his chest.

“According to you, I take too long with everything I do.”

“Yeah, you’re kinda slow with motion, Kenni. I need you to work on that.”

She rolled her eyes and he lowered his head to kiss her. When she pulled back, a smile blossomed on her face. “You were here when I texted you.”

“Yeah.”

“And what’s all this?”

“You like shit like this.” He smiled and his eyes never left hers when he circled a finger in the air.

“I like you.”

“You like me doing shit like this.”

She nodded slowly. “I kinda do.”

He chuckled. “Then that’s what this is. Me doing shit you like because I like making you happy.”

“And you needed an audience to witness you making me happy.” Her eyes flicked to the people boxing them in.

He leaned closer and grazed her mouth with his. “You don’t give me credit for shit. I wanted to make sure the moment was documented.”

She laughed and he turned McKenna then pulled her back into his chest. “Do your thing.”

Simultaneously, they lifted the lids to the boxes and black paper butterflies released from each one, fluttering around them. McKenna smiled and Carter’s mouth brushed her ear. His fingers glided over the ring on her left hand.

“Marry me, Kenni.”

“I thought you weren’t going to ask.”

“Was that a question?” The vibration of his voice danced against her back.

A soft smile eased onto McKenna’s face and she shook her head. “No, it wasn’t.”

“But I’ll ask if you need me to. I’ll do any-fucking-thing you need me to, Kenni.”

She turned against him and fisted his shirt at the sides. “Same.”

“Then say yes.”

“Y…”
