“You don’t think I can?”

“You definitely can. My mother, anyway. She’s going to take one look at you and be all in.” McKenna smiled cockily and added, “Which means my father is going to hate you.”

Carter’s eyes flashed with amusement. “There’s only one woman I’m interested in, so he doesn’t have to worry about me.” He winked and she smiled wider.

“Did you talk to my mom or my dad?”

“Your dad.”

“And?”

“And what?”

“What did you say? What did he say?”

“I told him I was in love with his daughter and was gonna marry her. I also gave him my word that you would be taken care of and he could trust me to be the husband you deserved.”

“You told him you were marrying me or you asked him if you could marry me.”

“I don’t ask for shit, Kenni. You already know the answer.”

She playfully rolled her eyes. “I do and what did he say?”

“He told me that his baby girl was more than capable of taking care of herself…” Carter glanced at McKenna who smiled, imagining her father saying exactly that. “Then he asked if I promised to make you happy, because having a healthy marriage where we are both happy was far more important. I gave him my word that I would do everything in my power to ensure you were.”

“I think I like the sound of that.”

He cut a glance in McKenna’s direction. “I bet you do.”

“You said he can trust you to be the husband I deserve.”

“Yeah…”

“What kind of husband is that?” She arched a brow.

“One who knows how to handle your ass.”

“Handle me?” She angled her head to the side and his eyes slowly crawled down her body.

“You need a reminder of how I handle you, Kenni?”

Her eyes rolled again but she didn’t speak because the reminders of how he’d handled her last night were still very present.

Thirty minutes later they were pulling up to a quaint little house on the beach. It was painted white with hints of blue and had large windows void of dressings, offering a light, airy feel. The location was private and not surrounded by any other properties. Inside, the furniture was mostly white and blue, matching the exterior of the house.

Very calming and peaceful.

McKenna explored the three bedrooms, living room, and kitchen while Carter retrieved their things from the vehicle and joined her on the deck where she ended up. It walked out onto white sand less than fifty yards from the translucent water.

“This house is so perfect.”

“You like it?”

“I love it.”

“Good because I bought it.”

“You bought it?”
