“Yeah, your parents live here, we’ll be visiting. I don’t plan on fucking you under their roof so I figured we needed our own spot.”

She grinned and he narrowed his eyes. “What?”

“That’s very not soft of you.”

He smiled, unfairly sexy, and dropped a kiss to her mouth. “We have a few hours before we have to meet your parents. What you wanna get into?”

She pushed her body against his, sliding her arms around his waist. “What do you want to get into?”

“The way you’re pushing up on me, you already know.”

McKenna stepped back, yanked the t-shirt she was wearing over her head, and tossed it at Carter before turning back toward the water. “Those lounges look pretty comfy and I’ve never had sex on the beach before.”

Carter dropped her shirt and came out of his as he followed the woman he would be committing his life to. She could have whatever she wanted, but he had a feeling she’d figured that out a long time ago.

A few hours later, Carter escorted McKenna to her parents’ house. They made casual conversation, enjoyed a meal together, then Carter was cornered by McKenna’s mother while McKenna and her father disappeared out back to engage in a private conversation. He wasn’t surprised at all that Olivia Smith wanted to question him because most of the evening was spent avoiding the topic at hand.

Carter, a man they didn’t know, marrying their daughter.

“I was thinking we could chat for a minute.”

He nodded respectfully and followed her into the kitchen where she unloaded the plates she collected from the dining room table. She motioned to the dinette and Carter approached, pulling out her chair before he settled into his own, body relaxed but dominant, spread wide while her petite frame sat demurely with perfect posture across from him.

She and McKenna had identical features but you couldn’t miss the maturity her mother possessed. She was still beautiful and looked much younger than he knew her to be.

“You two look alike.”

“We do but we’re very different with how we function.”

He smirked and nodded, raking a hand over his mouth.

Her tone didn’t give away much on how she felt, but the keenness in her stare did. She wasn’t a fan, which was slightly amusing. Carter wondered what McKenna told her about him or their situation. Details were shared, based on the hard lines of her stare.

“Tonight was a pleasure. I’m grateful for the opportunity to finally meet you Mrs. Smith.”

“You might want to reserve judgment about whether or not it’s a pleasure until after we’ve had a chance to truly get acquainted.”

Carter smirked and nodded. “Fair enough.”

He glanced past her toward the back of the house where Moses had an arm draped over his daughter’s shoulder while she leaned into his side.

“Are you worried?”

“Not at all. I’m more than capable of handling my own.”

“Hmmm…” she hummed lowly. “Don’t worry about those two. They’ll be occupied for a while. That will give us time to talk. Tell me about yourself, Carter.”

“What do you already know?”

Might as well start there.

“That you met my daughter and weren’t around. Now here you are again, buying rings and flying her here to meet the family.”

Ouch.

Okay then.

“The decision was mine, not hers, and it was what was best at the time.”
