She nodded shakily, looking up at me with wide eyes that held both fear and wonder.

“I’ve never… felt anything like that before,” she murmured.

I smiled reassuringly and kissed her forehead, leaning back to look at her properly. Her lips were swollen from our kisses and bitten red from where our teeth grazed against one another.

Her eyes were glassy with emotion, a mix of pleasure and fear that sent shivers down my spine. A small laugh almost escaped me as I realized how overwhelming this must have been for her. But it was too late now. I had a taste of her, and now I was hooked.

SERENA

Even without my usual alarms, my body still remembered when it was time to wake. As consciousness slowly tugged at the corners of my mind, I fought it down. The bed was soft and warm, and I was cocooned just so perfectly. I had no desire to wake up and face reality.

That and the pleasant soreness between my legs was another excellent excuse not to get up. A smile tugged at my lips as memories from the night before came to mind. Of Jalik.

Almost subconsciously, a contented sigh escaped me, and I nestled further into the plush pillows.

Then I heard footsteps approaching and I sat up abruptly. The bedroom door opened, and Jalik walked in carrying a bag. When he saw me, a roguish grin crossed his face and his eyes seemed to rove over me. Belatedly, I realized the blankets had fallen off of me when I sat up and now I was completely naked from the waist up.

Blushing, I pulled the blankets back over me. Jalik chuckled. “Do you think you’re hiding anything I didn’t see last night?”

“I suppose not,” I admitted. “It’s just a little chilly in here.”

He snorted, clearly not buying it, but he didn’t seem like he was going to push the subject any further. Jalik held the bag up in his hand and walked over to the bed. “I got these for you while I was out this morning. Figured you’d probably be hungry when you woke up.”

Upon being acknowledged, my stomach gave a loud grumble. I felt the heat rising to my cheeks again. “Thank you. You didn’t have to do that.”

Jalik waved away the compliment, opening up the bag, and pulled out several boxes of food. My mouth dropped open as I took in the contents of the box.

Inside each one were dishes I’d only dreamed of having. Sweet pastries that looked straight from a bakery window. Savory meats seasoned to perfection and an assortment of colorful exotic fruits were neatly arranged.

It was everything I’d always dreamed of having, but far out of my current price range. I hoped that success at the casino would help me pay off my contract sooner, and maybe someday lead to a better salary, but that was still a way in the future.

For now, Draven still owned me, regardless of how much money I brought in. I had next to nothing besides a temporarily valuable name. I was still a dirt-poor human underneath all that.

I stared back up at Jalik, disbelief coloring my face. Did he really do this for me? I know we slept together, but we never really said what this was. It certainly didn’t occur to me that he’d get me something this nice.

Jalik, though, just nodded towards the food. “Eat up before it gets cold.”

Deciding that I wasn’t going to get an explanation, I did as I was told and dug in. I nearly moaned as I sampled each new dish. They were even better than they looked.

I noticed Jalik watching me, and I offered him one of the boxes. He shook his head. “No, go ahead, I already ate. Besides, it’s much more gratifying to watch you eat it.”

A sheepish grin made its way onto my face, and I shrugged. “It’s delicious. Like some kind of feast you’d imagine at a party. Except, I’m having it for breakfast.”

“Perhaps I should buy you breakfast more often then,” Jalik murmured.

That made me pause for a moment. Did that imply that there would be more mornings like this? Or more importantly, more nights like last night? If that was the case, I was more than open to the idea.

“Of course, you’d probably get bored of it after a while,” Jalik continued. “The food simply wouldn’t be good enough for you after a while.”

I laughed. “If that ever happens, it means I’ve become a horrible, snobby, little twat and I beg you to put me out of my misery if that’s the case.”

Jalik grinned. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep you humble and make sure it never comes to that.”

I let out a giggle and then continued to eat. It occurred to me then just how relaxed I was. The past few days were especially miserably stressful, and no matter where I was, I never felt safe. But here in Jalik’s apartment, I felt completely at ease.

He squeezed my leg. “Finish up breakfast and then go ahead and get dressed. We’ll leave as soon as you’re ready.”

I furrowed my brow. “Where are we going?”
