“I am well aware of that, sir, but she insisted..” I sighed and looked back at the contract.

“Send her into my office.”

“Of course, sir.” She walked out of the room, and seconds later, Brielle came in. Standing up from my seat, I strolled over to her as she closed the door behind her. Placing my arms around her, she stopped any further movements as her hands rested on my chest.

“Why were you in the conference room?” I asked, and she sighed.

“I was distancing myself from you so you could actually get some work done, but I guess it didn’t work as well as I thought it would.”

“You’ll never fully be able to get away from me, Ms. Newman,” I muttered, and she patted my chest twice as she spoke.

“I learned that the hard way, Mr. Russel,” she said, sighing. I chuckled as she pulled out of my hold and walked into her office. Walking over to her door, I leaned against the frame.

“What do you think about putting Delilah in an exclusive private school?”

She tilted her head. “I thought you were all for online or homeschooling..”

“In some aspects, yes, but after seeing her with Kimiko, I thought she would enjoy being out with other children her age.” She walked over to me and smiled as she placed a kiss on my lips, wrapping her arms around my neck.

“Well, considering you’ve changed your viewpoints, I very much like that idea,” I smirked and kissed her lips again before pulling away.

“Have I told you today how beautiful you look?”

“You tell me every day, Killian. It’s something I won’t ever forget.”

“Is someone getting a bit boastful? I thought I was the only person in this office that was full of myself?” She rolled her eyes.

“I spend every day with you, Killian. I’m bound to pick up some of your bad habits.” Getting ready to fire back with a sarcastic remark, I was unfortunately interrupted when I heard Anna speak into my office intercom.

“Sir, two visitors have just entered the building and asked to speak to you.” I pulled away from Brielle, who in return made a gesture that indicated she would be outside to retrieve the refreshments, I assumed.

Pressing the button on my desk, I spoke. “Are they on my schedule? I wasn’t notified of a private meeting taking place today. Surely, Brielle would have informed me about this earlier.”

“It’s a drop-in. Our receptionist sent up their information, and I’ve forwarded it to your computer.” Going around my desk, I opened the information sent and furrowed my eyebrows as I looked at the two people. I felt as though my eyes were playing tricks on me. However, I didn’t care about anything on the screen other than the last name, which just so happened to beNewman.

“.. Shall I send them on their way?” Anna asked, and I paused for a moment. It was entirely in my nature to send away someone who came in unannounced, unprepared, and unscheduled, but it was clear these people were a bit more than just random.

“…I want to see them before you do. Send them up. I need Nathan to be by Brielle for the time being. Tell him to keep her distracted for as long as he can and not to let her leave that break room. Ensure all entrances are secured, and the visitors also must be searched before entering the elevator.”

“Of course, sir.” I walked away from my desk and entered the hallway, waiting for them to exit the elevator. After five minutes, the doors opened, and they stepped out. The man looked to be over 6 feet with dark hair and glasses. His figure was slim, and he looked like he could be in his 50s. On the other hand, the woman looked around 5‘6 with heels, and her hair was also brown and in a bob. She looked around the same age as well.

Making my way over to them, they smiled, but I could spot a fabricated smile from anywhere. I could see right through them.

“Good morning, Mr. Russel. How are you?” The man greeted nervously.

“I’m doing fine, thank you. As you can probably tell, I’m a very busy man. The fact that two people unexpectedly came into my office asking for my attention without notice is idiotic and completely disrespectful to both me and my time… To think I could spare so much as a minute talking to someone who just decided to drop in and disrupt my facility’s orderly conduct. Now, to what do I owe this unwanted visit?” I spoke as rudely as possible to see how much respect they had for me. The woman cleared her throat, clearly taken aback.

“We’re…Brielle’s parents. We actually came to speak to both of you.”

Keeping my slight surprise masked, I looked over to Anna, and by my gaze, she instantly knew to be on standby with whatever was to occur. I directed them into my office by only saying, ‘Follow me.’ Once inside, I closed the door and held my hand out for them to take a seat on the chairs in front of my desk. Going around to my own behind my desk, I took a seat and kept my eyes trained on them. After a small moment of silence, the man spoke.

“You know.. it’s been far too long since we’ve seen Brielle. I’m sure my little girl is all grown up now-” I cut him off.

“Of course, your little girl is all grown up. I’m sure you wouldn’t feel this way had you not left her at seventeen all by herself.” They both smiled sadly, but once again, I could see right through it.

“I-It wasn’t an easy decision to make-” The woman spoke, but I cut her off, not caring for her excuse.

“Seems like, at the time, you thought it was the best decision to make.”
