“Why would you ever assume leaving my youngest daughter was easy?” She asked, and I responded.

“Why would you ever leave your 17-year-old daughter in the first place?” The man scoffed, and from the look on his face, he knew I wasn’t buying any of their bullshit.

“Mr. Russel, with all due respect, I don’t think being interrogated was the reason we came to see you-”

“Then tell me the exact reason for you being here,” I stated, and the man spoke again. “We’re here to see Brielle.”

“Absolutely not,” I said without batting an eyelash, and they looked confused for a split second.

“..Why not?” The woman asked, and I sighed.

“You just deliberately lied to my face about your daughter and tried to get out of a question that should have been easy to answer.”

“We haven’t lie-”

“Mr. and Mrs. Newman, I know for a good fact that you are not here for the pure intention of seeing your daughter. Eugene filled me in on most of your wrongdoings, so for you to even think I’m buying any of the bullshit your selling, I’m telling you right now you can stick it back up your ass because I know the kind of people you are. You’re lucky I don’t have someone coming in and throwing you out of the building as we speak.” They were again taken back, but before we could continue, the door opened.

“Killian, what’s going on-” Brielle paused mid-sentence as they both looked over to her. In return, it looked like she was about to faint as she made eye contact with them, dropping the pitcher of water she held and making it shatter on the ground.

Chapter fifty

Killian

Brielle stood there frozen as she stared at her parents in shock, and I noticed the color in her face was quickly draining by the second. I stood up slowly as she started taking small steps back, trying to force herself to stay calm while tears came to her eyes. And as if on cue, the minute Nathan appeared behind her, looking extremely anxious, she ran out of the room as quickly as possible.

“Dammit,” I muttered as I went around my desk and went over to Nathan.

“Escort these people out of my building at once. I will deal with Ms. Newman… and you later as well.” I snapped as I specifically ordered Brielle to be distracted and out of my office. Ignoring the protests of Brielle’s parents as they were being thrown out, I quickly followed the trail of clicking heels that seemed to be getting faster and more distant. Coming to the middle of the hall, I groaned as I couldn’t hear her anymore. How fast can she actually run in those things?

I was pulled out of my thoughts as I heard the door slam in the far back. Turning the corner, I ran to the location of the sound and entered the women’s bathroom, which seemed like the only reasonable place she would be. My assumption was correct when I heard a slight sniffle.

Entering inside, I went to the only closed stall. After I opened the door, I was caught off guard as she threw herself onto me, wrapping her arms around my neck. I placed mine around her waist, and my heart ached as I could feel her shaking in my hold, the heavy tears on my shoulder, and the small, shallow breaths she was taking. After a few seconds, I rubbed her back and spoke softly.

“Brielle, sweetheart?” She didn’t say anything, and I just held her as we sat in silence. After about five minutes, I heard her faint whisper with the tremble in her voice.

“…Take me home Killian.” Nodding my head, I pulled away from her slightly and effortlessly picked her up in bridal style as I walked her out of the bathroom.

Watching the fireplace crackle as it illuminated the living room, I took another swig of the whiskey in my glass and sat in reflection. The more I drank, the more sober I felt. The day I confess my love for Brielle is the day that everything just decides to go to shit, and we’re back at square one, trying to make the problems disappear. The situation was slowly but surely slipping out of my hands as I realized how big of an issue this whole thing had already become.

So far out of it, I didn’t notice the pitter-patter of feet coming my way until a small body tried to lay down on my chest. Looking down, I saw Delilah on the sofa, trying to slip into my arms.

Pulling her closer to me, she laid her head on my shoulder as she whispered. “Mommy’s upset, Daddy.” She said softly, and I rubbed her back.

“I know…”

“Is she mad at you?” She asked, and I chuckled.

“Surprisingly little one, she isn’t.”

“Go make her not be sad anymore..” She looked up at me, and I tilted my head as she continued. “You always make her happy.”

“Is that so?” I questioned, and she nodded adorably as she snuggled into my chest with sleepy eyes. Benjamin walked into the room, and as if on cue, her eyes popped open as she sat up quickly. Seeing her trying to stay awake as her eyes slowly started closing was adorable.

“Delilah… I think it’s time for bed, don’t you?” Benjamin asked, and Delilah pouted.

“But I’m not tired.” He sighed as he walked closer and spoke again.

“Well, the fact that you are speaking to me with closed eyes tells me otherwise.” She sighed and held her arms up as her eyes remained closed. Benjamin picked her up and walked upstairs to take her to her room. I stood up slowly and pulled my sleeves up before running my hands through my hair. Hearing slow footsteps coming into the room, I stared out the window as he spoke.
