“K-Killian?” I asked, dumbfounded. “You’re the CEO?”

His jaw clenched slightly as he spoke. “It appears that I am..”

Sitting in front of him, I tilted my head in slight confusion. “You.. seemed surprised over the phone that I was looking into this position… And the ad came out only a day or two after we first met.”I spoke, slowly piecing together why I was now sitting here.

“Well, you did say you were looking for work.”He reasoned, and I spoke again.

“So.. this job was intended for me?”

“To a certain extent, yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, and he shrugged.

“Simple. You didn’t ask.”

“What makes you think I’ll say yes?” I questioned, and he gave a slight smirk as he stood slowly and rounded his desk. It took everything in me to meet his gaze as he leaned against the front of his desk, only a few feet away.

“Would I do all of this if you had the choice to say no?” He asked cockily, and I remained silent, almost in shock, as he continued. “If you don’t accept, Brielle, you’ll be surviving, not living. I’m not on track to being the country’s richest and most powerful man for no reason.. I know a thing or two about getting what I want.”

“Is that supposed to be a threat, Mr. Russel?” I asked, my heart beating in my chest rapidly, and he shrugged.

“I’dcall it more of a promise. I’m doing you a favor..”

“A favor.” I furrowed my eyebrows, and he crossed his arms.

“Yes, Brielle.A favor. The least you could do is accept it. You have a child, bills, responsibilities… Surely, you are in no actual position to pass judgment if I give you an offer you can’t refuse.. or force you to accept. In fact,” He pressed the intercom beside him and spoke.

“Anna, you can send the rest home. I found what I was looking for.”

“And what exactly are you looking for, Mr. Russel..” I asked, almost breathless, and he tilted his head momentarily.

“The answer should be quite obvious, Brielle. It’s you.”

Chapter six

Brielle

“Why don’t we discuss some basic things? Like what I expect from you as my assistant or the requirements that must be fulfilled…” He stood back up, and a blush rose to my face as he leaned down and placed his hands on the arms of the chair, caging me in. He slightly tilted his head, which was less than a foot away from mine.

“You do accept… don’t you, Brielle?”

I blinked for a few seconds, then whispered my response. “I don’t think I’d have much of a choice.” I bit my lip softly, and his eyes went to my lips for a second, then back to my eyes. I’d also subtly noticed that he started tapping on the arms of the chair with his fingers as if trying to distract himself.

“C-Can I ask you a question?” I spoke, and he shrugged.

“I don’t see why not.”

“…Why me? I’m positive my résumé has the tiniest bits of qualification that would get me in… any position, really. It surely doesn’t have to do with the fact that we’ve only talked for a maximum of two hours total..” He smirked, and his pearly white teeth came into view slightly.

“I have my reasons, darling. Now-” He stood straight up again. “I would like to give you a small tour before giving you any tasks today.” I stood up and followed him to a door on the side of the office.

“Because today is Friday, all of the work from this week needs to be completed. Weeks like this require a lot of exertion from our employees and other executives, so we extend the work week until tomorrow. For most of our employees, Sundays are free on a regular weekly basis. Working Saturdays depends on your position in the building. I am here seven days a week, so I expect you also to be here. If you do have issues or plans, I do understand. Just bring them to my attention a few days before.” I nodded, and he pulled out a key and opened the door.

“This is your office. You may decorate it any way you choose. This is where you will do most of your work. You may keep the door open or closed, whatever you prefer. I will buzz the intercom or call the phone if I do need you. Your computer is set up with the company’s documents, files, contracts, emails, etc. Your schedule will be presented to you before you start working… Are there any questions?” I looked in the office and gulped. All the information he just told me tried to process in my brain. I looked over to the wall outside the office. As I stood by the door, I noticed a rectangular black button. I pointed to it.

“What does this button do?” He walked out of my office, and I followed him. He pushed the button and stepped back behind me. I didn’t see or hear anything happen. However, I flinched when the grey wall suddenly went clear. I took a few steps back and blushed again when I felt him put his hand on my lower back. There was now a glass wall that showed the entire office.

“Oh,” I said in a whisper, and he chuckled.
