She ran her fingers through my hair slowly, and I shook my head as I spoke. “He told me there was a catch… he told me, but I didn’t listen. I wanted to make you happy, so I just told him to make it happen. If only I knew what I was getting myself into.” We sat in silence for a short while before I sighed.

“Are you happy?” I asked her, and she replied as she continued running her hands through my hair.

“Very.. It’s only for a few days..” I groaned. “I guess I’m just going to have to endure it.”

“I love you..” She said softly, and I chuckled humorlessly.

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” I stood up and brought her into my arms, and she looked up at me apologetically.

“I thought you knew about them all coming..” She admitted, and I shook my head.

“Benjamin tried to warm me, but again, I didn’t listen…”

“It’ll get better.. and that’s a promise I’m making to you right now.” She mumbled into my chest as she laid against it. Kissing the top of her head, I pulled her closer to me. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see intense rustling in the trees, and I looked over to the window for a moment. I was about to look back to Brielle when I saw Eugene emerge from the bushes.

As he climbed the tree, I shook my head. “You can try to change my mind, but I think this trip is only going to get worse.”

Chapter fifty-three

Killian

“You can try to change my mind, but I think this trip will only get worse.” A few seconds went by, and I felt Brielle place her hands on my face as she turned it softly. I looked down at her as she spoke. “Are you alright? You just mumbled something and stared out the window..” I nodded and kissed her on her forehead.

“It’s nothing, darling… Why don’t you get unpacked? I’ll be right back.” She nodded slowly as I pulled away and grabbed my coat.

“O-okay, are you sure everything is alright?” She asked, and I gave her a smile.

“Of course it is, sweetheart. I’m just going to greet everyone formally.”

“Alright..” She replied, and I watched as she walked into the bathroom. Leaving the room, I went downstairs and quickly looked around for Blaine. Noticing him by the window, I threw his coat over to him, and he glanced at me.

“Am I high, or did I just see Eugene climb a damn tree?” He asked, and I shook my head. “I saw him too. Let’s go.” He pulled on his coat, and we unnoticeably made our way outside. Going over to the tree, I looked around for any trace of the man when I heard Blaine speak again.

“…Definitely not high.” Looking over my shoulder in his direction, I saw Eugene sitting up in the tree, trying to get comfortable, but I caught his attention.

“Eugene, what the hell are you doing up a tree? Get down right now!” I seethed, and he deadpanned.

“But I just got up here.”

“Get your ass down here now!” I yelled, and he sighed as he started climbing back down. Once he reached the ground, Blaine spoke.

“Eugene, before he loses his mind anymore right now, do tell why you are here.” I waited impatiently for his answer.

“I was hoping to face Brielle..”

“So you thought a perfect time would be here at her Christmas holiday? Not one of your best ideas.” I argued, and he furrowed his eyebrows.

“Why do you keep assuming she will be upset when she sees me? I would also think she would be at least happy to see her older brother.”

“Of course, she’ll be happy to see you, but I know she’ll get angry the second she does. You’ve been out of her life for more than five years, and now you want to show up? It won’t all just be shits and giggles.” He looked away from me and sighed.

“I hate how right you are.”

“Well, I’m rarely ever wrong, so think about what you’re about to do and try not to act impulsively.” He nodded his head, and Blaine and I walked back. Opening the front door, I took off my coat and went into the living room to actually do what I’d promised Brielle. I instantly caught the attention of the entire room, and my mother stood up to give me a hug.

“Oh, my son. How are you? You seemed to run off before I could even say hello.” I hugged her back.

“I’m fine now, Mother, thank you for asking.” She pulled away, and Madam Alexandrova also hugged me.
