“I shouldn’t cry.. I shouldn’t care.. but I do. I still want their approval. I still want their love. A part of me wishes we could turn back time, but there would be no point… this was bound to happen..” I swallowed dryly as I shook my head.

“Another part of me feels guilt. I almost don’t feel anything. I’m not upset, angry, or anything at them, and that’s what bothers me. Even after the bomb you just dropped, I’m not any angrier than before you walked in. The problem is that the woman who supposedly was my mother turned out to be someone else, and I don’t think there’s one bone in my body right now that actually cares about it. Is that not upsetting? To get to a point where you’re just numb to the pain from someone, and you just don’t even care about them. Even if they were the ones who raised you?”

“Brielle, it’s not upsetting at all. It just goes to show how much you’ve been through already, and after taking some time to think, you finally realize how much of a ‘family’ they were to you. You don’t see them as someone to be able to lean on or go to for support or guidance. They left you, and after you acknowledged that, your dependence on them vanished, and over the years, that natural love that you had for them, regardless of it all, started to disappear, and you didn’t even notice it.”

“I guess you’ve made some valid points, Mr. Russel,” I remarked, smiling lightly at the end, and he softly ran his hand over my shoulder. “Don’t waste your tears on them.” He muttered, and I nodded as he sat beside me.

Laying my head on his shoulder, I whispered. “So what now?” I asked, and he sighed.

“You wouldn’t be angry if I told you I was already in the process of suing them for every penny they have and sending them to prison for larceny, embezzlement, and fraud? And if Marissa’s false claims do actually get through to the court, the second I find out what they are, she’ll go to jail for perjury?” I glanced up at him and saw him already looking down at me with love and admiration.

Looking back down, I sighed. “You’re crazy,” I muttered, and he gave a chuckle as he pulled me over to straddle his legs. Caressing my thighs, he tilted his head.

“Be lucky I have a few inside sources that give me more than enough information and pieces of evidence.”

“Who could have that much information about my family?” I asked, and he leaned his head back as he huffed, most likely contemplating whether he should tell me. Looking back at me as he raised his head, he spoke. “…Harrison, the man who helped you gain custody of Delilah.”

I crossed my arms. “Killian, are you serious?”

He shrugged. “I needed as much information I could get to put them away, and sure enough, he still has the security footage from the hospital and all the details regarding the case.” God, I couldn’t imagine he was this far in and already had planned out every single detail.

He spoke again. “But for me to put them away, I would need to know their whereabouts, and as of right now, they’re nowhere to be found.”

“Could I… possibly help you?… I need answers, Killy, and I know you’ll be the only person able to help me..” He bit his lip as he pulled me closer.

“So you want to be my little partner in crime?” I rolled my eyes at his antics.

“Sure, if that’s what you want to call it. So when do we start?” I asked, my heart racing in anticipation, and he placed a kiss on my lips before responding.

“First thing tomorrow..”

Eugene

“Eugene? A word, please?”

I heard Calvin say, and by the tone of his voice, I deemed that whatever he needed was important. I looked over to Brielle, who was staring back at me as she walked to the elevator, and I gestured to her that it would only take a second. Walking into his office, I closed the door and eyed him as he sat at his desk.

“You know Eugene… You are a very peculiar person. A brother from the army.. coming home to save his young sister from their deceiving family… A touching story, truly… could make a pretty good book if you ask me.”

“What the hell do you want Calvin? If you just want to talk nonsense, then I’ll be on my merry fucking way because I am on the worst terms with you if you didn’t know. Don’t forget the fact that you have your men watching me 24/7, invading my life.” I retorted, and he shook his head.

“We all know you’ve been through some things, Eugene. Unimaginable things that no one could ever understand unless they were in your shoes. Everyone continuously turns a blind eye to your actions… not really going in-depth to know what exactly you do or what you’ve done…But I’m the only one that actually knows how bat-shit crazy you are..” He chuckled for a moment before giving me a grin and then whispering.

“And from the looks of things… I’d say you were the same before you even went to war. I mean, you tell me, what sane person would actually climb an apartment complex with more than fifty floors and drop from the roof without breaking a sweat? Not to mention you actually planned to murder your fellow soldiers and command officers so you could get away.. or was that just supposed to be kept as another secret or rather.. an accident as you explained to Killian...” I narrowed my eyes at him as I spoke.

“What the hell do you want from me?” He gave a smile as he stood up.

“I want to help you, Eugene, and at the same time, you’ll be helping me. I want to put your abilities and potential to good use..”

“I don’t have time for this shit,” I snapped, making a move to turn away, but his following words stopped me.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but… the day Marissa left my home, were you not the one to push her up against her car and threaten her? I was almost certain you might have killed her on the spot… I know most of what you had to do was necessary for war, but you’ve been in the country a good year now… lots of time to do many different.. things. Makes me think if you were to actually lose control, something like that could happen… It hasn’t happened before, though…right? Or at least.. that’s what you’re convincing yourself with while your murdered comrade talks to you.. I wonder how Brielle would feel if she knew the extent of what you’ve been hiding from her..” I turned back to look at him, and his facial expression had turned serious.

Stepping closer, he pulled out his business card and stared at me for a moment before speaking.

“I know where you are and where you go. You can call first to make things easy, but just wait for me to call. You will answer.. won’t you, Eugene?” I nodded hesitantly and took the card out of his hand.

“Pleasure doing business with you,” He mused, and I quickly turned around and left the room.
