“Can I ask you a question, miss?” I hummed as I turned to look at him.

“…Why does the conversation of money or wealth bother you so much?” He asked, and I shrugged my shoulders.

“I didn’t grow up in a wealthy household, and I’ve been caring for myself and Delilah for the past five years. Just because Killian is offering me a lot of money doesn’t mean I’m willing to accept it. In my life, I’ve only given… It’s been a while since I’ve received.” He nodded his head in understanding, and we soon entered a luxury store, much to Leo’s surprise. Picking up a pair of heels, I examined them as he spoke.

“So now you’re picking things willingly? What’s the catch?”

“If I don’t look at the price, then there won’t be a problem,” I muttered, and I saw him looking at me with a bit of doubt.

“I’m sensing that’s not the only reason..”

“Would it be wrong of me to make an excessive purchase out of spite for him stealing my freedom and control?”

“Not at all. Let me suggest this rather beautiful purse that would go well with your eyes.” He mentioned, pointing to a beautiful purse, and I narrowed my eyes at him.

“When were you going to tell me you had fashionista on your résumé, Leo?”

“Simply one of my many talents, Ms. Newman… May I suggest this scarf to go along with it?” He suggested deviously, and I smiled as I picked it up and examined it. Before I could comment on how soft it felt, he had already brought another set of heels and a matching purse.

And for the rest of the hour, Leo allowed me to indulge and let loose for the first time in my life. As we approached the counter, a sense of happiness lingered in the air for the fantastic time we spent together and a hint of excitement about seeing the final price of everything.

We walked over to the register, and I made eye contact with a woman who seemed rather irritated with my presence. As we placed everything on the counter as politely as possible, she glanced down at the neatly folded and organized items before I handed her Killian’s card. She gave me a look before she spoke.

“I’m going to have to see some ID,” she said with a slight attitude, and Leo gave her his certified ID, which proved he worked for Killian.

Still, she shook her head. “I need to see a little more than just this, or else I’m calling the police.” I pulled my phone out and quickly called Killian while Leo looked at his watch as if he was bored with this all.

Killian answered the phone and spoke. “Darling, I don’t have much time to talk. Is it something important, or are you ready to rant about how much you don’t want to spend again?”I ignored his last comment and looked up at the woman as I answered.

“Killy, the saleswoman said she can’t allow me to use your card because we don’t have your identification.” He went silent for a moment before answering rather sinisterly.

“Hand her the phone.”He seethed, and I had to clear my throat as his voice all of a sudden made me feel hot.

Nonetheless, I handed her the phone as I whispered.“It’s for you…” She took the phone, uninterested, and spoke.

“Hello-” She started cockily, but her eyes quickly went wide when Killian seethed into the phone with his anger at a max.

“W-well s-sir, I was j-just making sure-” He cut her off again, and I was slightly starting to feel bad for her. Another man in a suit walked out of the back room and approached us.

“Is there a problem here?” He questioned, and the cashier quickly handed him the phone. The man’s eyes widened when he heard Killian speak into the phone.

Leo nodded toward the entrance for me to step out momentarily, and I did. Sitting outside, the guard from inside stood beside me in an almost protective manner, and it got me thinking about how one interaction with Killian could change the dynamic of an entire situation. Leo handed the guard my phone after a moment and again entered the store. He gave it to me, and I held it to my ear.

“Killy..” I said softly, and he replied.

“Everything is taken care of. And sweetheart, if you are going to try to spite me.. you’re going to have to spend a little more than 75 grand.”He spoke cockily, and I groaned at my failed attempt.Obviously, it failed Brielle. He capped your spending limit at more than 500 grand a week.

“I’ll let you wallow in your failed attempt as I have to go to my next meeting.. oh, and I do hope you enjoy your present..” He finished and ended the call as I tilted my head in confusion. Like clockwork, Leo exited with the shopping bags and handed me a small box. Looking down at it, I sighed as the price tag put our scheme to shame.

“Did the plan to spite him work?” Leo asked knowingly, and I shook my head as I looked at the diamond necklace in the small box.

“Unfortunately, Leo.. no, it didn’t.”

After a 30-minute drive, we were back at Killian’s home, and Reginald had sent someone out to help with the bags. I entered the living room and made eye contact with my baby, who had been peacefully sitting on the couch.

“BRIBRI!!!!!” She screamed as she ran over to me, and I picked her up to smother her face with kisses.

“Dede, my little baby. I missed you so much!” We laughed together, and Reginald entered the room.
