“Why didn’t Uncle Eugene call? He always called on my birthdays..” Brielle’s breath hitched, and she looked over her shoulder as she saw Killian leaning on the doorway. She didn’t think Delilah was old enough to remember Eugene or his involvement in their lives, but it appeared she was well aware of the mysterious man who was her uncle.

“Baby.. Uncle Eugene is.. very busy right now, but he told me to wish you a happy birthday.”

Delilah smiled, and her eyes started closing. “I liked the princesses.” She said softly.

Brielle giggled, caressing the side of her face. “Did you now?” She responded, and Delilah nodded sleepily.

“I want them all to visit again..”

“…I’m sure Killy will be able to make that happen, and that’s a promise.” Delilah smiled, and Brielle tucked her in.

“Now, tomorrow, you can continue telling me all about your favorite part of today. Right now, it’s time to get some rest..” Delilah’s eyes were fully closed, and Brielle kissed her forehead before whispering.

“I love you, Dede.” She stood up slowly and approached the door, where Killian gently pulled her towards him, then nudged Delilah’s door until there was just a crack.

After a few seconds, Delilah opened her eyes and watched Brielle and Killian walk away from the shadow silhouettes underneath the door. Replaying Brielle’s words in her mind, she spoke softly, filling the silence of her room.

“..I love you too, Mommy.”

Chapter twenty-four

Brielle finished getting dressed and sighed as she looked out the window. It was pouring rain, and this weather in the city was never a good thing. The traffic was terrible, the people were more rude than usual, and the worst part was-

She closed her eyes and winced once she heard Delilah’s harsh coughs in the next room over, followed by a series of sneezes.

-Delilah. Every time it rained or snowed a little too much, her immune system would act nonexistent, and she would catch every slight cough or sneeze. Walking out of her room, Brielle went to Delilah’s and opened the door slowly. There, she saw the little girl sitting in bed with a red nose and bloodshot eyes. She made eye contact with the little girl, and Delilah raised her arms as tears threatened to fall from her eyes. Brielle quickly rushed over to her and picked her up. Her skin was hot, but she was shivering.

“B-B-Bribri.. I don’t f-feel good.” Brielle shushed her softly as she sat on the bed, cradling her in her arms.

“I know, baby, I know.. you’re burning up. Did you sleep okay?”

“Mhmm. I-I just woke up and felt b-bad.” Brielle stood up with her in her arms and walked to the bathroom. Opening the cabinet, she pulled out all the necessary medication and sat the young girl on the counter. After helping her brush her teeth, she gave her a teaspoon of each before she picked her up once again to head downstairs. Along the way, she noticed Killian, who seemed ready to depart. He walked over to them and kept his eyes trained on Delilah.

“What does she have?” He glanced up at Brielle, and she sighed.

“No clue.. When it rains or snows, her immune system just gets a bit weaker, and her symptoms mimic common ones from the flu or a regular cold.” He gazed at the little girl again briefly before looking back to Brielle.

“Has she had her shots?” Brielle rolled her eyes at the man’s ridiculous statement, but she knew not to expect much more.

“Don’t say it like that. She’s a child, Killian, not an animal, and yes, she has.”

“Just taking precautions, love. Getting sick is not exactly on my agenda this week.. Anyway, I’m going to the office a little early today, so you can take as much time as you need. Because of the rain, I’ll drive myself so George won’t have to rush back and forth.”

“You? Driving? I thought you had hundreds of chauffeurs ready to go?” She teased, and he rolled his eyes.

“If I were to bring a new chauffeur.. George would feel offended. He’s been with me for far too long, and he would take something like that to heart.”

“But you don’t really care about that, do you?”

“Not at all. But I guess caring about people’s emotions is the uh.. humane thing to do..” Brielle smiled and tried to walk away, but Killian caught her arm. He leaned down to her ear and whispered, making the goosebumps on her skin rise.

“I’ll see you at the office..” She shivered as he breathed in her scent, but she quickly pulled away when Delilah looked up and opened her eyes. She gave the little girl an ‘innocent’ smile and walked down the stairs. Going over to the kitchen, she heard the elevator ding and assumed that Killian had already left. She sat Delilah at the table and brushed the hairs out of her face before speaking.

“You want to eat something for me, baby? Hmm?” The little girl nodded softly, but before Brielle could call Benjamin, he had already entered the room with two filled plates and two glasses of orange juice on a platter, which he skillfully held with one hand raised up by his shoulder.

“Thank you, Benjamin,” Brielle said gratefully as he placed the food in front of them.

“It’s my pleasure, Ms. Newman. No need to thank me.” Brielle helped Delilah eat as she fed her small bites, and Benjamin cleared his throat.
