She placed the blankets on the couch and removed Delilah’s wet coat and boots before placing her on the makeshift bed. She sighed heavily before walking to her desk and plopping herself in her seat. Eventually, she noticed all the paperwork on her desk and decided to begin.

After about thirty minutes, the door opened, and she looked up to see Killian leaning against the door. She stood up and walked out of the room so as not to wake Delilah. He sat back at his desk, and she sat across from him.

“Did you finish the reports I gave you the other day?” she nodded before he spoke once again. “What meetings do I have today?” Brielle opened her tablet and read off the names of the companies. After hearing his schedule for the day, he continued.

“I need a double background check on those last two CEOs and remind me to make a call to Mr. Masahiko. We will be traveling back and forth to Japan, and I want to ensure he’ll be prepared for our arrival.” Brielle nodded her head and started going through her calendar and notes. Killian watched her as he stood up and walked around to lean against the front of his desk.

“Anything else, sir?” She asked as she placed her iPad in her lap, and Killian bit his lip.

“Who’s Eugene?”

Chapter twenty-five

“Who’s Eugene?” Brielle froze in her place as she suddenly felt lightheaded. She looked up at Killian, who was analyzing her sudden shift in mood, and waited patiently for her to respond.

“He’s… my brother. I don’t talk about him much because Delilah will ask questions, which leads to me.. trying not to break down minutes later.”

“I’ve never heard you mention him once since we’ve been together.” He wanted to ask what had happened, but as if she had read his mind, Brielle answered his unspoken question.

“He went to the army when I was sixteen, and he’s never been home since. He used to call twice a month, maybe even three times, to make sure I was okay, but after a few years, the calls got slower, and eventually, he just stopped. It’s been over a year, and I haven’t heard from him once.” Brielle revealed, and she couldn’t help the small tear that escaped her eye. Killian continued to stare at her, and eventually, more fell. He felt himself wanting to move to wipe them away, but she shook her head.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered before grabbing a few tissues. He gently grabbed her arm and pulled her over to him as she wiped away her fallen tears. She laid her head on his chest as her hands gripped his suit, and he kept his arm around her waist. He ran his fingers through her long hair, and after a few moments, he spoke.

“I could have someone look him up to see where he is or what he’s been up to if that’s what you want.”

Brielle shook her head. “I don’t think that would make me feel any better.” Killian nodded, though he had already started planning his visit to a few of his employees who were good at locating and tracking people.

“It’s not good to bottle up your emotions.” He whispered softly as she scoffed playfully.

“Says the one who does it every single day.” She smiled, and he caressed her waist.

“I know what will make you feel better.” She looked up at him and tilted her head. “And what might that be?”

“Have dinner with me,” he almost pleaded, and she giggled softly in response, her hand resting on his bicep lovingly.“Answer one question for me first.”

“Alright, love.”

“Why did you want to know about Eugene?” She asked and felt him tense up a bit before looking away while clearing his throat.

“Research purposes.. I overheard you talking to Delilah.”

“Well, Killian, it’s you, so I will always expect you to reply with those answers, but.. I have a feeling you did it because of something else.” She tried to study him as she spoke, but he didn’t say anything. She finally noticed a different emotion in his eyes and pulled away slightly.

“Killian… Were you feeling..jealous?”

Killian scoffed in response. “Jealousy, by definition, is feeling or showing envy of someone, which I have not done so yet.”

“The way you’re talking makes me believe you were feeling much more than jealous.. A littlecovetous, perhaps?”

“Explain yourself.” He ordered, and she bit her lip.

“Well, Mr. CEO, covetous by definition is having or showing a great desire to possess something, typically something, or in this case someone, belonging… to someone else.” He stared into her eyes intently as the tension rose and internally chuckled at how easily she clapped back.

“If Delilah says she misses a man who so happened to call her every birthday and she doesn’t have a father figure in her life as of right now, what do you think that leaves me to believe?”

“That I was dating Eugene?” She questioned as he nodded.

“That was my first thought when his name was said, yes.” He pulled her closer by the waist. She was flushed against his chest as he gazed down at her with possessiveness in his eyes. “I am a very possessive man, Brielle.. And when I want something, no one is allowed to take it.”
