“Is Brielle with him?”Calving tilted his head at the question as he swirled the liquid in his glass with his hand.

“Now, why is that a question of interest?”

“You know I want my daughter back, and you’re playing me like this is some game.”

“Life is a game, sweetheart... Think of it like a game of chess.. some are kings, queens, bishops, rooks… valuable players on the board..” He muttered, glancing at the board before he continued.

“And others are pawns.. meant to be used for a single purpose and tossed when they’re no longer essential. Getting Delilah back was never a part of the deal. Kitten was never even your’s to begin with.” He said with a chuckle, and Marissa seethed.

“Don’t you get it! I want Brielle gone! I don’t even know why I bother-” Calvin stopped listening to her as he sat up in his chair and moved the chess piece.

“Stop talking, little girl.” He berated, then switched around the chess board and studied the pieces so he could try to outsmart himself.

“Don’t you dare try to put me beneath you!”

“The money flowing into your bank account can be repealed right now, and you’ll go bankrupt with all the shit you’ve already bought… and I’m sure you just love the casual walk-ins to Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton… I would tell you to shut up and listen to your sugar daddy.. but that would be rather tasteless, would it not?” She stopped talking, and Calvin smirked as he moved the chess piece.

“That’s a good girl. As you know, in the agreement you signed, you represent nothing more than a pawn in the game. In other words, you move when I tell you, and you are to do what I say, when I say it, without question. You are just here to throw Brielle off course so she can go to Killian, making him weaker and more vulnerable. However.. Delilah and Brielle are not to be harmed in any certain way. ESPECIALLY Delilah. This means I can’t exactly do much to Brielle. It also means...”He sighed. “I can’t do too much to Killian… If kitten were to be extremely upset at me for something I did to the two of them, I’d never forgive myself.. the thought brings tears to my eyes.”

“Wait a minute. What does my daughter have to do with all this?”

“I see a future for her—a very bright one at that. I know Killian won’t approve of me being in her life by any means, but trust me, it’s going to happen.. In the meantime, until I can find a use for you, you need to stay put.”Marissa ignored the last part of his sentence as she asked him another question.

“So if you don’t want to see them suffer, then why the hell are you even doing all of this? What’s the point?”

Calvin moved his chess piece and turned the board once again.“Some may think it’s the destination that matters, but that’s never quite the case. It’s the ride that gives you the thrill of the chase, the excitement of the next turn, the anticipation of who will take the lead.. If I got to the destination already, it wouldn’t be much fun in the end now, would it?”

“But if Killian doesn’t want to play your games, then why do you keep at them?”

“Two players are required to be in Tom and Jerry or Road Runner.. It just wouldn’t be the same if there were only one. Killian could have ended me a long time ago, but in some way, he enjoys the game as well. Get’s off on it even. I help him in many ways, from his anger to his happiness and vice versa. We have a relationship like no other. Now listen,” He heard her move things around again in the background, but she didn’t say a word.

“You follow my orders, and nothing happens to you and your money. But once you step out of line, I won’t hesitate to end it all.” He ended the call and smiled. He knew that Killian thought he was trying to sabotage him and Brielle…

That fact was still quite true, but upon meeting Delilah, something in his mind clicked, and he was planning not only for now but also for the near future. He was always just one step ahead of them, maybe even two…

He moved the next piece with the smile still plastered on his face. “Checkmate.”

After she showered, Brielle combed her hair out and watched in the mirror as Killian walked into the bathroom. With only her towel wrapped around her frame, she watched him slowly approach her before caging her between himself and the sink. She leaned into his hold, knowing he didn’t mind her damp hair on his bare chest. Placing her hands on his arms, she felt a familiar feeling in her heart.

“You don’t know how much you mean to me,” He whispered in her ear, and she continued looking at him through the mirror. His body towered over hers possessively, engulfing her almost.

“You give me a sense of control. You make me feel things I never thought I could… Ineedyou for that reason.” She stroked his arms as she could tell he wasn’t used to speaking this way.

“As intolerable as I may be, you can still find a way to bring me out of the darkest places in my mind, and for that, I thank you.” She smiled as he placed a small kiss on her neck.

“You’re welcome.” She whispered and felt her heart flutter once again.

“I didn’t scare you too much today, did I?” He asked, and Brielle shook her head.

“I just don’t want you to get hurt… I care about you.. a lot, Killian.” He remained silent and placed a few more kisses on her neck.

“Sometimes… I want to ask the question every girl asks when she’s confused by the guy and… she can’t understand what she feels…” Killian already had an idea of what she meant. The infamous ‘what are we?’.

Though he knew exactly who she was to him—she was everything to him, and she knew that. However, he knew how denial could cloud a person’s judgment, so he would wait.

“..And when you ask the question, I’ll be sure to give you an answer.” He muttered as he gazed at her lovingly in the mirror.

He would always wait for her.
