“You think so?” I asked her, and she nodded her head vigorously.

“You two kissed!” She exclaimed in a whisper, and I chuckled.

“We sure did..” She looked at me for a little longer, and I could see a little evil glint in her eyes.

I furrowed my eyebrows. “Is something wrong?”

She shrugged. “Bribri still doesn’t know you said bad words in front of me.” I sat up in my seat and looked over my shoulder to see if we were being watched.

“What do you want from me? I thought we went over this?” I snapped, glaring at her.

“You.. still didn’t take me to Build-A-Bear.” My eyes went wide as I remembered the first time I cursed in front of her and promised to take her.

“How about I take you there once we get back home? I’m sure we’ll be able to sort this all out..” I proposed, and she gave me a hug before she hopped off my lap.

“Thanks, Killy!” She beamed as she skipped out of the room. I know most people would be upset at the fact that a five-year-old was trying to practically shake them down, but I couldn’t feel anything but pride.

Looking back at my computer, I chuckled. “That kid’s going places.”

I opened my eyes, and they darted over to where Brielle was supposed to be lying. I sat up and pushed my hair out of my face. Glancing over at the clock, I noticed it was two in the morning. I felt the spot on the bed where she had been lying, and it still felt a bit warm, indicating that she may have recently gotten up.

I got out of bed and walked out of the room. The hallway was lit by the moonlight shining in through the window. I made my way down the stairs and over to the couch, where I found Brielle sitting. I crossed my arms and watched her stare blankly at the wall.

“Brielle, darling, why have you gotten out of bed?”

She looked up at me, her face emotionless. “I guess I just couldn’t sleep.. I’ve only been down here five minutes…” She whispered, and I took a seat beside her. She pulled out her phone and opened up her email. Handing it over to me, I furrowed my eyebrows as I read it.

“A couple of hours ago, I received an email from a DHS worker I know. He said Marissa is trying to reopen the court case.”

“Has she made any progress?” I asked as I read the email, and she shook her head.

“No, he told his lawyer buddies, and they sent her away, but he thinks she’ll be back.” I placed the phone on the table and looked over to see her eyes tearing up.

“Killian.. I’ve done n-nothing wrong to my family.. Nothing at all.. but they all either leave me or just hate me as a person.. Now.. now they want to take my baby away from me..” She whispered, and I didn’t say anything. Grabbing her hand, I pulled her over to me, and she laid her head on my shoulder.

“I feel like I’m drowning..” She almost cried, and I shook my head.

“Just breathe, darling.. just breathe.. If someone is causing you this much pain, they do not deserve to be called family. I don’t want you to worry so much. We’ll sort this out.” She gave me a small smile, and I effortlessly grabbed her waist and brought her into my lap so she could straddle my legs.

“As much as I enjoy being tossed around, you know you can’t just move me around like some kind of doll.” She uttered, smiling. I caressed the side of her face, and I could tell there was still a bit of sadness in her eyes.

“Have dinner with me again. It’ll take your mind off this whole thing.”

“Are you going to ask me about marriage again?” She questioned, and I hummed. “It crossed my mind. Why do you ask?”

“Because asking someone what they think of a long-term commitment is not a conversation starter.”

“It sounded like one to me.” I leaned in closer to her, and she sighed.

“God, you’re crazy,” She whispered.

I looked down at her lips and then back to her eyes as I responded. “…Only for you,” I whispered before gently placing my lips against hers.

Chapter thirty-eight

Killian

Walking into the penthouse, I watched Brielle and Delilah go upstairs to sleep, as it was only five in the morning. Benjamin walked over to the elevator and nodded his head at me. “Good morning, sir.”
