“What reasons exactly do you have for leaving your little sister in the dark for almost a year and not bothering to make an effort to visit in the last seven?” I inquired, ignoring the last part of his sentence. His shoulders seemed to tense up.

“Get out.” He seethed as he stood from the desk, and I proceeded with caution as his body language became more defensive.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that until I’ve gotten what I need,” I replied as he stoically walked away from the desk to open an adjacent drawer. As he rummaged through it, he spoke.

“Once again, I am politely asking youto leave.”

“Well, I don’t think you’ve been quite polite at all, frankly. I wonder how you’d sound rudely asking me to leave..” Instead of continuing our rather.. unproductive conversation, he quickly reached into his side and pulled out a pistol. Taking a more active approach, he cocked it and aimed it toward me.

“Mr. Russel, if you would be so kind as to exit the building, I would gladly appreciate it. As a thank you, I’ll try to refrain from shooting you in the fucking head. My tolerance and patience are not even close to what they used to be, and I am not afraid to murder you in cold blood.”

I smiled as he glared at me. “Is that so… I’m sure you would just love to get me out of the perfect picture in your mind, but sadly. I can’t do that. You know who I am. What I am capable of-”

“I’m not intimidated by you or your power, Killian.”

“You shouldn’t feel threatened by me, Eugene.. We’re practically family. You should be petrified if anything.” He was about to speak to me once again, but he abruptly turned his head and glared at the empty chair.

“This isn’t a fucking joke..” He seethed, and I eyed him carefully before speaking as he clenched his jaw. “Who are you talking to?”

“Doesn’t matter anymore because he’sdead.” He growled, looking at the chair for a bit longer before turning to me. I pondered for a moment before tilting my head to the side.

“Is that why you’re here?” I asked, and his eyebrows furrowed.

“What do you mean?”

“Is he the man military officials found in place of you?” I questioned, and immediately, I could tell his blood ran cold as his hand tightened on the gun.

“You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.” He snarled, and I shrugged.

“Oh? Did military officers not find an unrecognizable corpse with your tag?” I questioned, and he didn’t respond.

“It was an accident,” he clarified, and I shrugged. “Well, that’s sure as hell what you made it look like. And whether or not it was genuinely one, your buddy was simply at the wrong place at the right time for you to escape.”

“I said it was a fucking accident.” He snapped, and I nodded.

“Alright then. Aside from the genuine conversation you’ve had with a ghost of your past, your growing rap sheet for military officers you’ve killed ever since you went awol, and the fact that you have overall shown me that you’re incredibly unhinged, I know you’re a good person.” I acknowledged and thought about my choice of words for a moment.A good person.. Bit of a stretch, but we’ll see how he responds to that.

“And how do you know that?”

“Because you will do anything to protect your sister and niece,” I answered truthfully, and I noticed he was having an internal battle with himself as he spoke once again.

“Just fucking tell me why you’re here already!” He growled, and I could tell I had hit a soft spot.

“Are you going to put the gun down?” I questioned, and he simply stared at me as I gave a forced grin. “Right then.” I grabbed my phone from my pocket and went to a voice memo I’d taken a few weeks ago.

“You’ve always been such a messy little bunny.. clumsy and just downright stupid.”Marissa spoke, and Eugene’s face immediately changed into one of horror.

“Bunny..” He whispered as the recording continued.

“Mother and father would be ashamed.. what am I saying? They still are. When Calvin told me, you were with Killian.. I didn’t believe him for a second. I thought to myself.. Why would Killian, out of all people, want someone as low-life and pathetic as you?… Well, I guess you weren’t too pathetic to raise my child. Thanks for that little favor, by the way. You saved me so many years.”

“I-I struggled even to eat half the time because she needed food. Do you not care that I was barely surviving, trying to make sure she was alright? She was premature, so I had to spend extra money visiting the hospital every month with her for a year. Do you not have any sympathy for me or your own daughter?”Brielle cried, and he slowly lowered his gun as his face softened completely. He continued listening and dropped the gun to the floor once he heard the last part.

“I guess the connection between you and… Delilah has grown a lot over the years, so asking for her would be a little too much for you.. but that is exactly what I want.. Maybe after I get Delilah, I’ll take Killian along with me.. I’m sure that doesn’t sound at all pleasing either..”

He balled his fist in anger as the recording ended, and after a few seconds, I watched as he ran his hands down his face. Not a moment after, he turned to the wall and punched it, leaving a huge dent. I could hear Blaine in my earpiece eating what I assumed was popcorn as he listened to our conversation. Rolling my eyes, I turned the volume down before returning to Eugene.

I tilted my head slightly. “Now.. I’m hoping I can actually get an answer or two out of you regarding a few questions I have. Preferably without being held at gunpoint. If you don’t mind, of course.” Looking over at me, he sighed and walked over to the cot to take a seat. I approached him slowly and stood a few feet away as he began.
