He checked on Beau and then focused back on her. It didn’t bother her at all that he was still focused on the job. As long as he cared deeply for her.

“Myra. I swore I wouldn’t get in another relationship after Sadie’s death.”

She nodded, and fear chilled her clear through.

“But if you’re willing to try … I find that I can’t stop thinking about you. I don’t want you out of my sight.” His gaze captured her, and her stomach swooped. “The connection we have is more incredible than anything I’ve experienced. Being with you is worth the risk.”

“I’m all in.” She smiled up at him, and the rightness of him—of them—overwhelmed her. A chance at being with Ike felt like a gift from heaven above. A gift she’d longed for but never thought she’d receive.

“That’s all I could ask,” he said softly.

She hoped he’d kiss her, but there was a pause as if he didn’t know how to proceed.

“So I guess this is two warriors who don’t know how to have a relationship, not faking a relationship but making it real.” She felt silly, but Ike knew she didn’t have the right words and he didn’t care. His words weren’t perfect either. He was a warrior. He was what she wanted. Somehow they’d navigate the twisted path of a relationship.

“There’s nothing fake about how I feel about you,” Ike said in a gruff voice.

He released her face, slid his hands around her back, and tugged her against his beautifully built chest. Then his mouth came down hard on hers. It didn’t hurt. Far from it. His mouth connected intricately with hers, like two warriors meant to fight side by side, watch out for each other, have each other’s backs. He wasn’t stepping in front of her; he was trusting her and she was trusting him. They were working together, and they were connected lips, bodies, and souls.

But they weren’t fighting side by side right now. They were loving.

Myra had never thought she could be a lover and not a fighter.

She’d been wrong. So wrong.

She moaned as Ike slowed the kiss and, more patiently than she imagined her warrior could be, he slowly tasted her lips, as if savoring each moment, each sensation. His lips produced a tingling warmth that spread throughout her body. She clung to him as he increased the intensity of the exchange again.

If the relationship was messy and hard, moments like this would get them through. Their connection felt like it was inspired from heaven above.

She would never give up on it.

Ike didn’t ever want to stop kissing Myra. But the Star Stabber was still at large.

He slowed down the kisses and then held her close, catching his breath and checking that Beau was sitting on the couch, on his phone. No danger in sight.

“That was beautiful,” she whispered, blinking up at him. Her dark eyes mesmerized him. “Did it feel like that when you kissed Sadie?”

His eyebrows lifted.

“Sorry. That was a kiss mood killer.” She looked away.

Ike gently grasped her chin and turned her face back toward his. “I like you being blunt and open. I want to hear everything that goes on in that beautiful mind.”

“I don’t know about that.” She smiled. “There’s a lot happening up there.”

“I bet there is.” He kissed her but pulled back before he lost his head and they kissed the night away. “The truth is, Myra …” He swallowed and admitted, “I’ve never experienced a kiss or touch that equals yours.”

Myra’s eyes widened, then she kissed him. She kissed him fiercely and thoroughly and he never wanted to stop kissing her.

She pulled back, and her dark eyes sparkled at him. “That was a very good answer.”

They stood there, smiling at each other like fools, then he knew he had to say it. “We’d better get inside and tuck Beau into bed. Then can we … talk?”

“As long as the talking includes long interruptions for kissing.”
