Oh my god…my stomach churns and I curse my fucking body. “I don’t know what to say,” I mumble.

“You don’t have to say anything. They did this to both of us. Put you in a state where you…where you assaulted yourself as much as me. It’s disgusting and they’re going to pay.”

My hand is still on her shoulder, and she reaches around to take it, then snuggles into my chest. Her shoulders shake, and I scent her tears a second later, mingled with the overpowering smell of blood, sex, bodies.

“I can’t let this break me,” she says, her voice strangled. “I did…I wanted you, Luka. But not like this.”

“I know,” I reply, my voice muffled as I bury my face in her hair. It still smells like her—like sugar, pure, sweet. She holds my hands over her heart—and somehow, even though our clothes are in tatters and I’m locked inside her, it feels entirely non-sexual, comfortable, safe.

“We’re going to get out and we’re going to fucking kill them,” she says, her voice so quiet I can barely hear it. “Irving. Lianna. Jasper.”

“Irving?” I frown.

“ACB agent visiting from Solstice Bay,” she says. “They want to use this to start a new Great Mutation on their terms…make us all docile. They called it a chemical lobotomy.”

“Shit,” I curse.

“There can be so much beauty to the mating bond and they’ve made it into a tool,” she goes on. “I hate them so much…”

She pauses.

“…I’m gonna make it slow for each and every one of them.”

I give her a small smile, even if she can’t say it.

“Together we’ll do it, Aisling,” I say softly, my voice barely audible in our shared misery. “We’ll escape this hellhole and make them pay.”

We lay there, locked together and bound by blood, bond, and rage. The weight of our situation presses down heavily on us, threatening to smother us. But we can’t let that happen.

We have to fight.

We have to survive.

And most importantly, we have to take revenge.

“Don’t let them take that away from us,” she whispers, her voice full of emotion. “The bite…it still marks us as bonded, Luka. Even if it was entirely out of our control, I believe it was meant to be.”

I search for a sign of it, and I find it almost right away—not only on her neck from my sharp teeth, but a small bite on my hand. She must have used her teeth in the struggle, inadvertently bonding us.

“I’m so fucking sorry,” I say, voice hoarse. I want to sob, want to scream.

“I don’t want this to be a reminder of something horrible,” she breathes. “Just…between us, Luka. No one else needs to know. I’ll tell Gunnar and Oberon it was consensual. And we can…we can nurse our wounds and figure things out when we get back to the city.”

Gunnar would kill me if he found out how this went down; he might kill me anyway when he finds out I came to this island to help him out and ended up fucking and marking his girl.

But I’ll keep this secret for her.

Because I don’t know if he can handle the agony of what happened…and I don’t think Aisling can either.

Chapter twenty-two

Gunnar

The dock reeks of salt and diesel, a tang that bites at the back of my throat. Water slaps concrete like it’s got a personal grudge.

This is the Angels’ one and only stronghold on the coast—north of the city, beyond Echo Beach. Most of the coastline belongs to the Eclipse, and most of the desert belongs to us…but here, Vance keeps his yacht, his shipping barge, and a number of speedboats for security.

Each and every one of them is ready to deploy to save Aisling.
