“Yes, really. Yes or no, Thompson?”

“Will I get to ride on the motorcycle?”

“Yes. Whatever you want. Just come with me.” He sounds as desperate to see me as I am to see him.

“You sweet-talker, you. I’ll do it.” I laugh and he huffs a breath into the phone.

“Good.”

Satisfaction fills me. “I don’t want to hang up,” I whisper.

“So don’t,” he says in that blunt Jonah way.

“I have to go to sleep. I have to get up early tomorrow and get ready for a baby shower my weird boss invited me to.”

He laughs. “So go to sleep. I’ll be here.”

My heart clenches, but I settle under the covers and put my laptop away. I stare at the empty space where I wish Jonah were. “What did you do today?”

“Meetings. Endless meetings. They were boring, and if I tell you about them, you’ll definitely fall asleep.”

“Tell me.”

I can hear that he’s smiling while he tells me, and I wish I were there to see it.

And that’s how I fall asleep with the phone next to me and Jonah’s voice in my ear.

Jonah

Callie is a vision when I pick her up. Her hair is twisted up in a messy bun, her eyes are soft, her lips are glossed.

I grab her around the waist and pull her up against me. “I fucking missed you.”

She stills, her lips parting, but I’m not sure how she’ll respond, so I kiss her, groaning slightly when her lips make contact with mine. I delve my tongue into her mouth and tighten my arms around her back. She responds like it’s the best kiss she’s ever received, like I was gone for a year instead of two days. Her hands are in my hair, and her breasts are pressed to my chest, and fuck, I want to drag her into the back of my car and raise the privacy screen.

“In the car, beautiful.”

She settles herself on the seat and greets Lou like an old friend.

“Making friends?” I ask.

She smiles serenely. “He’s been telling me some great stories. Sounds like you’re actually the easiest client he’s ever had. Shocking, I know.”

“You know. I’ve never thought to ask. I should.” Hot shame fills my chest. Callie is undoubtedly a better person than I am.

“Since when do you own a small limousine?” Callie asks, interrupting my thoughts.

“Since today,” I say. “I had it special ordered. Originally, because riding in that tiny car with you was torture, but now—” I press the button to raise the privacy screen.

I tug her onto my lap and cup the back of her neck with my hand. “Look at all the fun things we can do.”

“Oh no.” She laughs. “What if Lou hears us?”

“I have it on good authority that the soundproofing is excellent.” I give her a lazy smile. “But if you don’t want to—” My other hand drops from where it was toying with the hem of her dress. Need for her is fire in my blood. My body is humming with anticipation, but I can be patient.

“I do want to.” She bites her lip, her eyes already eager with desire. “I’m scared, Jonah.” She traces my jaw and I hold myself still. “I’m scared that this is going to blow up in my face. It’s too wonderful. I like you too much.”
