“Karaoke.” My tongue is thick and awkward. This was a bad idea. We can work together in the office just fine, but socializing? After hours? What was I thinking? “Do you want to come?”

He’s silent for a second. My heart tries to leap up my throat. He’s going to say no. Of course he’s going to say no. He told me we were just a boss and employee. I read into our success this week way more than I should have.

“What’s the address?” he finally says.

Luz picked this place and I’ve never been here before. “I’m not sure of the address. I’ll just send you my location.”

“Are you drunk?” He sounds incredulous. And pissed.

“Don’t get your panties in a twist, Jonah Crown. I’m allowed to drink after hours.”

“So you are drunk. Send me your location.” His voice is flat.

“You know what? Forget it.” Anger bubbles in my veins. “I don’t know why I even emailed you. It was stupid. I thought maybe we were friends after this week. Or something. I thought you might want to go out and have fun. Let off some steam. Lord knows you could—”

“I wouldn’t finish that sentence, Thompson,” he says silkily. “Send me your location. Or I’ll search every karaoke den in the city to find you. And you won’t like what happens after that.”

“Promise?” I ask snarkily. He’s such an ass.

His breath is loud in my ear. “That’s not my kink,” he says shortly and hangs up the phone.

I press a hand to my mouth. Adriana and Luz are staring at me with huge eyes.

“You could cut the tension between you with a knife.” Luz grins.

I roll my eyes, but I have to agree. Jonah makes me feel all fluttery and hot. That’s not my kink. So he does have a kink? Maybe it’s giving endless orgasms to women on the floor of his gym. Something jumps in my stomach and I press a hand to my abdomen. I have to be the stupidest woman alive. “This is dumb,” I grumble, as I pull open my texts.

He’s already sent me two—

Jonah

Location.

Now.

I hit “share location” and look back at my friends.

“Something tells me I’m going to regret this.”

32

Jonah

Chasing my employee into a karaoke den has to be one of the strangest things I’ve ever done. When I push open the door to the dark room, my eyes immediately snag on Callie. Her hair is up, her neck is bared, and her skirt is short. She’s swaying to the music, sipping a beer. My gaze flicks to the empties on the table. She has to be drunk.

That’s half the reason I’m here, and I hate it. My quiet evening at the office disrupted by thoughts of her trying to walk home in the dark, getting accosted by another drunk guy, getting hurt.

Her friend with the curly hair realizes I’m there before Callie does.

“Your boss is here, Cal,” she says flatly.

A petite bleached blonde jumps up, unsteadily. “Oh, you must be Jonah. Wow.” Her mouth pops open. “He’s just as hot as you said he was.”

Callie winces. “Luz, please.”

Satisfaction curls in my stomach. “You said I was hot.”

“Shut up,” Callie grumbles. “It’s a fact of life. You know it. I know it. The general public knows it.”
