“I’ll get you a dozen just to be sure.”

“Thanks, Daddy.”

“Well, that didn’t take long,” Cass gloats when she barges into my room without knocking later that day.

I roll over in my bed to avoid looking at her. “Go away, Cass. I’m not in the mood for your shit today.”

“So, the Irishman wasn’t your prince charming? How sad.”

Of course, he wasn’t prince charming. Still, she was attracted to him too.

Without facing her I mutter, “I know you threw yourself at him, and that he didn’t want you. Why did you lie to me? Why lie about him wanting you or about refusing to marry him? He never wanted you, so why? Were you jealous of me?”

“He told you about all that?” she asks, sounding surprised.

“Yes, the night I was nearly killed by drones.”

“Oh, don’t be so dramatic.”

Now I sit up to glare at her. Like usual, she’s in athletic gear, black leggings, and a black tank top but her hair is straightened and she’s wearing makeup for some reason. “I was nearly killed by a horde of exploding drones! One of my guard’s head caught on fire. Have you seen her hair?” Toni and Lena are staying at the penthouse with me. After a quick chat with my father, he agreed to hire them both, and pay them more than Lochlan paid them to work for him.

Spinning my computer chair around toward me, Cass lowers herself into it. “He hired female guards for you?”

“Yes.”

“Wow. He doesn’t want you near any other men.”

“No, he doesn’t, the fucking hypocrite. He flipped out the night of the charity event when I was talking to Cole.” Glancing down, my hands fidget with my tennis skirt, my fingertip rubbing over the tiny hole Lochlan made in it with his knife the first time we met. “You wouldn’t even believe how mad he got when I simply said his name. Then, when Cole came to play tennis with me, Lochlan showed up all angry and ran him off.”

“Cole came over to play tennis with you?”

“Yes. He’s decent, better than I expected. Vanessa obviously taught him. She guilted him into coming over.” I pause in my rambling, and it occurs to me that it’s odd for Cass to ask about our stepbrother. “Why do you even care?”

“I need to know everything there is to know about my enemy.”

“Your enemy? Who? Cole?” I ask in confusion.

Shrugging, she says, “Enemy. Competition. Same thing.”

“Competition for what?” I ask curiously.

“Who Daddy will choose to take over for him one day.”

“You mean…Daddy’s going to let you take over all the drug trafficking and his businesses?” I ask in disbelief, and a little bit of jealousy.

“Me or Cole. He’s going to test us and make a decision in a few months.”

“Wow. Why Cole?”

“He’s Petrov’s grandson. Daddy thinks the pain in the ass Russian holdovers who stayed after he took down Petrov will be more inclined to follow his bloodline.”

“Oh. Right. I’m just…I can’t believe Vanessa would approve of Cole being part of that sort of thing.”

Smirking, Cass says, “Vanessa doesn’t approve. She’ll let Cole make his own decision, though. She said she’s going to try to help me win.”

“But I thought…wasn’t Lochlan supposed to be Daddy’s heir?”

“He was going to be until you came running home a blubbering mess. Daddy just changed his mind, offering me and Cole the chance to become his successor.”
