“Are we going back there?” she asks softly.

“No. Not tonight. I’ll take you someplace safe,” I promise her, even though I haven’t figured out where yet.

My phone buzzes in my suit pocket. Sophie fishes it out and I hold my breath until I see whose name is on the screen when she offers it to me. I take it in my left so I can keep my right arm around her.

Thankfully, it’s just Flynn.

“What?” I snap at him.

“You just fucking left us here!”

“There was an emergency. Get an Uber.”

“An emergency?” he repeats.

“Sophie was attacked by exploding drones at the estate tonight.”

“No shit? Is she okay?” I’m surprised that he even bothered to ask how she’s doing. I eye her profile carefully, hoping I didn’t overlook any internal injuries. But the color is coming back in her cheeks the longer I stare at her.

“Other than a few scratches, she’s unharmed. Her guards got her off the grounds and we won’t be going back there tonight.”

“Yeah, don’t blame you,” he agrees. “Owen’s getting us a ride.”

“Good. I’ll talk to you later,” I tell him before ending the call.

As soon as I end the call, Sophie says, “You left him at the office?”

Thankfully, Flynn’s loudmouth hadn’t disclosed his location.

“I was in a hurry,” I reply.

“Can I use your phone? I should call my dad,” she says, making me go still.

“What? Why?” I ask. That’s the last thing I want to do right now—deal with a furious, vengeful Italian mob boss who could very well take her from me for putting his daughter in danger.

“If he hears about it, he’ll worry…”

“He won’t hear,” I assure her. “Trust me. It’s best if we keep this quiet. If Dante found out I almost got you killed…”

Now her head turns to look at me, making me cringe at the sight of scrapes and dirt on her perfect face thanks to her near-death experience.

“I could’ve died, and you’re worried about my father finding out and being pissed off?”

There’s the fire-breathing Sophie I know and love.

Goddamn it.

I fucking love her.

That’s what this immovable knot in my chest is that’s been hurting for days. The knot that doubled in size when Wolfe told me she may be hurt or dead.

I barely know this girl, she’s made no secret that she’s repulsed by me, and yet, I’ve somehow fallen in love with her. I love the way she challenges me, drives me crazy, and leaves me always wanting more. Sophie’s been mine since the second I saw her. Now I just have to convince her to stay with me.

“No, princess. I’m worried about you more than any fucking thing right now,” I tell her softly as I push those thoughts away for now. “You’re my responsibility, and I didn’t protect you. If Dante finds out I fucked up, he’ll probably kill me, and I’ll deserve it.”

She stares at me for a long moment. “Promise?” she asks, as if she doesn’t believe me. I’m not sure which part she’s skeptical about, that Salvato will murder me or that I’m more worried about keeping her safe.

Both things are absolutely true.
