“This idea of yours could work to send the rat scurrying. Salvato may even let me borrow Eli to really scare the shit out of them.”

“You are supposed to be allies now that we’re married. Wasn’t that the whole point of it?”

“Fuck,” Lochlan mutters as he gets to his feet to pace away then come back. Lifting his arms, he locks his hands behind his head, flexing his biceps in a way that makes me wish I had a camera to capture the image forever. I’ve never wanted to lick anything as much as I want to run my tongue up his abs, down to the cut V-muscles dipping into his shorts…

“He’s going to be fucking furious with me.”

“What?” I ask when he continues to pace and curse.

“I’m going to have to tell Salvato about the drones.”

“Honesty is probably best before he finds out on his own.”

Lochlan nods but doesn’t lower his hands from his head as he stares off in the distance. “I’ll reach out to him when we get home, finally give him the blackmail on my contacts to appease him.”

“When are we going home?”

“Once the tennis court is repaired, and I come up with how to make sure an attack like that never fucking happens again.”

“You’re not psychic, Lochlan. You couldn’t have known.”

Now his arms drop to his sides. “No, but I could’ve been more prepared for an aerial assault. I should assign snipers to observe the sky from the rooftop like I did for the wedding.”

He actually had snipers watching us during the wedding?

“A sharpshooter could safely hit any incoming drones before they get too close to the property. I’ll figure out a way to keep you safe, Sophie. I don’t want you to live in fear when we return home.”

“I’ll be fine,” I assure him. “Do you think it was the same person who planted the bomb at the casino?”

“Possibly.”

“Well, if I were you, I wouldn’t tell anyone about the ‘fake torture’ if you decide to go through with it, not even the guards. Everyone should be considered a suspect for now.”

“You’re right,” he agrees, fingers raking through his hair. “I fucking hate not knowing who I can trust, if it could be someone I consider more than an employee but a friend. One who betrayed me, tried to kill me, and murdered so many innocent people.”

“I’m sorry you don’t know who’s loyal and who isn’t. It kind of makes me glad I don’t have friends or anyone I’m close to other than my family who isn’t paid to be around me.”

“Salvato really kept you that insulated from the rest of the world?”

“Yes.”

He stares at me for a long moment, then says, “You can play tennis with Cole if you want. I won’t run him off again if he’s your…friend.”

That concession makes me smile because I know he hates when Cole’s around me, that he’s jealous, when he shouldn’t be. Cole is a cute, silly boy while Lochlan is a sexy, dangerous man. “Thank you.”

“Although,” he adds. I knew it was too good to be true. “I doubt Vanessa will let her son come back to our house after bombs were dropped on it.”

“Dammit. Probably not. She was furious my dad took Cole to that poker tournament.”

“At least he walked out unharmed.”

“Yes, he was very lucky,” I agree.

“So you seem to be enjoying your time at the tennis center,” Lochlan says as if wanting to change the subject from my stepbrother.

“I love working at the center. Thank you for introducing me to Julia. Her and Stacy think I should work toward my teaching certification.”

“Of course, you should. You’re the best person to teach others tennis, especially children. I’m sure they realized that too.”
