I didn’t know if Sebastian wanted to talk or if he was missing me as much as I was missing him, physically. We hadn’t had sex, just the two of us, and I was starting to worry that he wasn’t interested in my body anymore. I knew it was starting to change with pregnancy and I worried about it, a lot. Sebastian was stunning. He was beyond attractive and I was…me.

After towel-drying my hair and dressing in a clean sleep shirt that hung to my knees, I slipped my feet into my shoes and quietly walked to Mallory’s door. I knocked with a wince on my face, hoping I wasn’t interrupting anything too great, or wild. I didn’t want to see anything.

After a few seconds, Mallory opened the door looking like she’d just run a marathon. She was bright red, sweaty, and breathing hard. She gently closed the door behind her and stared at me with wide eyes. “I think I’m in love.”

“Me too.” I smiled at the shocked look on her face and rushed on. “Sebastian asked me to sneak out with him for a bit. Can I-”

“I’ll turn on the monitor for Avery’s room and keep an ear out for him. Go.” Her eyes grew misty. “You’re in love? For real? Because I was just saying that because Paul’s dick is heaven. I think I’ve been sleeping with the wrong men. I love yoga men but…Paul can throw me around, Fifi.”

I waved my hands to get the image out of my brain. “That’s amazing and I’m so happy for you.”

“Well?”

“Well, what?”

“Are you in love?” She put her hands on her hips. “If you lie to me, I’m going to refuse to watch Avery. Maybe he’ll start taking drugs when you’re out and no one’s watching him.”

I slapped her arm and scowled. “Not funny. And…I don’t know. I think so. It’s crazy, right?”

“No, you’re a romantic. Of course, you’d fall in love with one of them. Is it Seb?”

I looked away. “I think it’s all three of them, Mal.”

She laughed like she thought I was joking and then her mouth fell open when she saw that I was serious. “Oh, shit. Really? Well, I’ve known people in poly type relationships and it works when it works. If anyone has enough heart to love three different men at the same time, it’s you, baby sis.”

I smiled. “I would kiss you on the cheek but I saw you wiping your mouth earlier and you’ve always been a messy eater, so…no, thank you.”

She laughed out loud and then slapped her hand over her mouth to quiet herself. We both stared down the hall and listened to see if Avery moved around, but it was silent. “Go. Go see your man. I’ll make sure Avery is good.”

“I love you. Thank you so much. Congrats on Paul’s dick, by the way.”

Paul opened the door before I finished my sentence and I could tell he heard me by the smirk on his face. He nodded at me and tugged Mallory back into the room.

Mallory swooned and waved at me. “I love you! Have fun. I’ll listen for Avery.”

I waved to her and hurried down the stairs. Slipping out the front door, I saw Sebastian waiting for me in his truck. He tried to get out but I was faster. I climbed into the truck and quietly shut the door before turning to him. I knew what I wanted to see. I wanted hunger and desperation. He didn’t disappoint.

“Put your seatbelt on.” His voice was huskier than normal and his eyes focused on my bare legs. “Where are your pants?”

I shrugged. “Lost ‘em.”

He shook his head and gripped the back of my headrest as he backed out of the drive. “Is Avery asleep?”

“Asleep and Mallory is going to keep an ear out for him.” I turned to face him as he drove and noticed the way his hand gripped the steering wheel tightly and the way his jaw muscles worked like he was clenching his teeth. “Everything okay?”

He drove to a part of the neighborhood I didn’t recognize and sighed. “Yeah, I hope.”

I watched as the neighborhood fell away to new construction and still Sebastian drove farther until the street ended and there were no lights, other than the trucks. It was shockingly dark without a single street lamp or even the moon shining. “Where are we?”

He parked on a patch of dirt and pointed out the front window. “This will be developed in the next year or two, but for now, it’s where I do my best thinking. There’s a lake and during the day, it’s stunning.”

I took off my seatbelt and curled up in my seat to face him. “Planning on murdering me?”

He snorted out a surprised laugh and shoved up the center console so he could drag me closer. Cupping my face, his dark eyes reflected the lights on the dash. “Not a chance. I’m slightly concerned that that’s where your brain went.”

I shrugged. “When you watch a lot of true crime, you never stop wondering.”

“I don’t even know what to say to that.” He let out a deep sigh and I knew the topic he really wanted to talk about was coming. My insides tightened with fear as I waited for him to drop whatever bomb he was going to drop. “I need to apologize.”
