“Don’t lose this one, boys.”

That’s it. That’s the talk, and I can’t help but roll my eyes before laughing.

Coach typically has plenty to say. There have been times we’ve been pushing the clock, almost late, because of his long-winded speeches. Today, he keeps it short and sweet, and I can’t say I’m not happy about it.

After his less-than-serious pep talk, everyone heads out of the locker room, and I trail them.

The last one.

I can hear the screams of the crowd.

My heart beats out of my chest, adrenaline pumping through my veins as I glide onto the ice.

I skate to the center and look toward the stands. Knowing the general vicinity of where she’ll be, it doesn’t take long to spot her. Cassidy’s head is tilted back on a laugh, clearly finding something the person next to her has said funny. She’s fucking gorgeous.

My eyes trail down her body and stop on her chest. She’s wearing my jersey, and my cock goes rigid in my pants at the sight. How the hell does something so simple have this much of a reaction on me?

Fuck.

With her hair thrown up into a bun, she’s a wet dream.

I shake my head. Not the time for this.

I’m standing on the ice, waiting for the game to begin. Get your head on straight, Slate.

Focusing my attention forward, I wait for the game to begin. My heart pounds with anticipation as the people in the stands stomp and make noise. Then it happens. The moment I’m waiting for. The puck drops, and I explode forward, my skates cutting into the ice with precision.

This is what I love.

The thrill of the game.

Controlling the puck.

The cold air rushes past my face as I push my body to its limits, racing toward the opposing team’s goal.

Time passes, plays attempted, but finally sixteen minutes into the second period, I get my opening.

Surveying the ice, I analyze the best path to the goal.

My gaze drifts out toward the opposing defenseman moving to block me.

He’s searching for my weakness, and I’m searching for his.

That’s when I see it.

It’s crystal clear what I need to do.

I spot a small gap, a sliver of opportunity, and with a burst of speed, I dart toward it, leaving the defenders in my wake.

The crowd goes crazy as I break away, careening toward the goal, weaving between the opposing team. My stick works the puck until I’m almost there.

The roar of the crowd builds with every move I make. Adrenaline surges through me.

I take my shot.

Goal.

The crowd erupts, but I only have eyes for Cass as I search for her up in the stands again.
