“This crazy fucker thinks we need to leave, because he thinks someone will have reported the gun shots.”

“He has a point,” Slide states.

“No way are we leaving him to deal with the fall-out on his own.”

Sirens can be heard faintly in the distance and my heart stutters in my chest.

“You need to fucking go. This needs to be explained and I need to make sure that nothing comes back on the club. Please, Maverick, do this for me,” I plead with him.

“Son, he knows what he is doing.” Sarge steps to his son.

“Dad, don’t make me leave my man.” My chest aches hearing the pleading tone of my man’s voice but I am doing the right thing for him and his club. Hell, for Darcy and me also.

“Please, go. I need you to go to Darcy. Get into bed and make it look like you have been there for some time, make love to our girl. All of you make it look like you all had something else going on.”

“I do not need an excuse to fuck my Ol’ Lady, I am out.” Slide holds up the peace sign with two fingers.

“Jesus, will he ever grow up?” Sarge mutters, looking at his retreating brother.

“Fuck no, but we wouldn’t want him any other way.” Rookie slaps Sarge on the back and gives me a chin lift before walking off.

“Cal, this is a big thing for you to do for the club. You need anything, you call me. Big time respect for you,” Magnum states, gripping my shoulder.

Fuck me, I fight the ball of emotion in my throat. This club treats me like I am their flesh and blood, something I have missed out on with my own family.

The rest of the brothers follow Magnum out of the building, leaving me alone with Maverick and Sarge. I swallow hard, and the sirens get louder and louder.

“Go. Now. I will be with you soon, I promise.”

“Mav, let’s go, Son. Cal knows what he is doing. I respect the shit out of you for putting my boy first. We will see you at home soon, son.” Sarge cups my jaw, and tears fill my eyes.

Fuck me, I am crying like a pregnant chick.

Emotions are running high but I need to do this to ensure they are all safe and not in any trouble.

“You had better come home to us real fucking quick. I love you.” His words smack me right in the chest.

What a time to tell me.

“Fuck, I love you too.”

I kiss Maverick, deep and hard like my life depends on it, pouring all of my love into this one kiss, before I pull away and his father drags him outside to his bike.

It doesn’t take long before I hear the sound of the brakes of the patrol cars. Car doors open and close and then I hear the officers calling out so I identify myself.

“I am Sheriff Cal Warren and I am unharmed. My gun is holstered.”

CHAPTER THIRTY

MAVERICK

I roll my bike alongside Darcy’s car. It is early hours of the morning and the neighbors are asleep, and I have no doubt Darcy is, too.

I made sure to turn the bike off a few streets away so I don’t draw attention to myself. A prospect is sitting on the steps of her porch, but he stands when I get closer.

“Maverick.”

“How has she been?”
