“You may be Rookie’s kid, but fuck me, you are a mini-Slide.”

“I heard that” —Across the room— “I am proud of that observation.”

“Fuck me, he may be old but his hearing is on point,” I mutter under my breath, shaking my head with a grin.

“I heard that too, fuckface,” Slide calls out, making everyone laugh.

Looking over my shoulder, I see him and the other older members looking in our direction. My father winks at me, and I nod to him.

He knows I am trying with Kady but his warning is clear in my head.

“Is your hearing aid turned up, old man?” I call out.

Slide flips me off, and another round of laughter fills the room. My heart stutters in my chest when I turn back to Kady and see her smiling at our interaction.

“Boy, I still have more game than you at my age. I had my Ol’ Lady eating out of the palm of my hand by now. You are still trying to get your girl to smile at you.” Slide looks smug as fuck when I look back to him.

Fucker.

Kady giggles, coughing and trying to hide it when I look back to her, giving Slide my back. My gaze locks with Kady, and I swear I feel this one look deep in my bones. She has this way of getting under my skin and making me feel shit that I never thought I would.

I was always the wild Rugged brat, the bigger slut of all the brothers, so I never thought it was for me to settle down, but I wasn’t one to turn away from it if it happened.

Then Kady came back into my life with such a force there was no way she could escape me this time. Then the attack happened and it was like there is no holds barred, she would be mine.

“Have a drink with me?” I blurt out.

She blinks out of her stupor, her eyes going wide, not expecting me to ask her out.

“No,” she says firmly.

“So what, you can go out on a date with a complete stranger but refuse me?” I edge her.

Shrugging, she pushes to her feet.

“Where the fuck are you going?”

“I have to work. I only came here this morning to drop off the piece that Risky ordered.”

“Let me bring you lunch,” I offer.

She sighs. “Calder, it would never work between us. I want something that will last a lifetime, not that will last for ten minutes.”

“Hey, I last for more than ten minutes, thank you very fucking much.” My hand goes to my chest in mock horror.

Her lips twitch as she fights back her smile.

“That’s not what that chick from Junction said a few weeks ago,” Travis calls out.

Sniggers and coughs go up around the room, someone mutters, ‘burn,’ but I see the moment that statement impacts Kady. Her face falls and my gut drops.

Fucking hell.

“Travis, honey, you need to learn to shut your mouth, and read the room. Now your daughter needs a diaper change, so off you go.”

Travis sighs, walking across the room. He collects his daughter from his woman, kissing the top of her head. His gaze catches mine and he mouths ‘sorry’ before leaving the room.

“Joss, I need some help in the kitchen,” Willa states, and they leave us.
