The bosses worked from home most weekends, so I would have some privacy. Since I had a key, I could do a little research and dig into some client files. Not only did I want to know who Death was behind the mask, but there was also something about him that tickled my brain, and I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me.

As I drove, I munched on a few fries and sifted through potential men who had been to the firm in the last twelve months. Three stuck out in my mind, and one in particular. I needed to see his file again since it had been a year.

Ten minutes later, I steered the car down the dark alley next to the office and parked behind the building. The moon was full, lighting my path as I hopped out, locked the doors, and hurried to the steps leading to the building. Although it was a nice neighborhood, I didn’t like to make a habit of running around at night alone.

Once I unlocked and locked the front door, I walked to my desk. I flipped on the light and then settled in. Spotting a sticky note on the bottom of my monitor, I swore under my breath. I’d almost forgotten to pay my dad’s medical bill.

Powering on the computer, it whirred to life, breaking the silence in the room. I opened a browser, logged into the website, and clicked the pay my bill option.

“Huh? A zero balance? That can’t be right. Their system must be down.”

I searched around, but all the other online options seemed fine. Suspicion tiptoed through my mind, leaving chills in its wake. Death had arranged Dad’s trial for me. He’d also admitted that he was my only income on the adult website. Had he paid the bill?

I heaved a sigh, my mind racing as I tried to piece together who the hell he was. I shot up, sending my chair rolling to the side of the small room as I grabbed my cell and hurried to the locked filing cabinets in the library. Since our clients were criminals, my bosses left nothing to chance, including any of them snooping around where they shouldn’t. Everything was locked down and hidden.

After my first year working for Barnaby and Smooch, I was trusted with the knowledge of where the safe was located and how to access it. I placed my phone on top of the cabinet, then located a key that was nestled in a combination safe behind a scenic picture of the ocean. I opened the first drawer and thumbed through the folders.

“Gotcha.”

Next, I pulled files on two other men, gathered them along with my cell, and returned to my desk.

Carefully, I cracked open the first one, my heart racing as I read over Barnaby and Smooch’s notes. It seemed that my notorious criminal attorney bosses were on retainer for some of the city’s most wealthy and powerful individuals, all accused or involved in shady money laundering and fraud schemes. Sweat beaded on my forehead as I focused on the name on the third file. Fear wrapped its icy fingers around my throat as I slowly opened the last one and flipped through the pages.

I gawked in disbelief. Every damn piece of paper was blank. A corner of something caught my curiosity, and I located where it had stuck to another sheet. I peeled the photo away from the page, and my mouth hung open as I stared at it in dismay, confirming the name that I saw was accurate. “Son of a fucking bitch.” I double checked the information, not believing my eyes. “How in the hell does this all fit together?”

Chapter 27

Death

“A wise lamb knows when to bleat and when to silently walk, just as a wise wolf knows when to hunt and when to watch.” ~ Anonymous

The light inside Barnaby and Smooch’s office was barely visible as I crept up to the side of the building and peered into the window. There she was, my beautiful little lamb with her nose where it didn’t belong. If she dug too deep, she would connect me with people she already knew, and that couldn’t happen. Not to mention, whoever thought of hiding a key behind a picture should be—killed.

After a long day of relocating John to an abandoned warehouse in the middle of fucking nowhere, I hammered railroad spikes into his feet, anchoring him to the floor. The sound of his agonizing screams bounced off the walls, and my dick got so hard I thought I was going to cum. I needed to ravage my little lamb until she screamed and drained my dick dry with her tight cunt. I eagerly made the eight-hour drive to see her.

To my disappointment, Ella wasn’t where she should’ve been … at home waiting for me. Not only had I placed a tracker on her car, but I’d also bugged her phone and camera. I heard what she said—saw what she saw.

When I realized she was at the office digging through files in a futile attempt to discover my identity, rage churned in my stomach like a violent storm at sea. She had crossed a line, and she would be punished. I gripped the handle of my knife, my knuckles turning white as the blinding anger boiled in the pit of my stomach, giving birth to the dark thoughts that swirled in my mind. Ella would regret the moment she decided to dig deeper. I submitted to the all-consuming need to destroy and teetered on the brink of madness as every cell in my being burned to make her bleed.

“Oh, little lamb, you should be afraid,” I whispered.

The front door opened, and Ella walked down the stairs and sidewalk, looking completely fuckable in her tight dress and black heels. I counted her steps as she rounded the corner of the building where her Camry was parked. One, two, three … as soon as her back was to me, I slipped up from behind and slapped my gloved hand over her mouth. She froze, her breathing quickening as I held her against my body. The curve of her ass pressed against my hard shaft, and I growled.

“I see you’ve been busy while I’ve been gone.”

Her shoulders slumped when she recognized my voice—another mistake.

“Little lamb, you should know better than to relax in the presence of a wolf.” I forced her to walk to her car. “Hand me your car key, and then drop your purse and files on the ground.”

She handed me the key fob, and I unlocked the doors before shoving it into my front pocket. The clatter of her items hitting the asphalt rang through the parking lot as she trembled, her fear so thick in the air I could fucking taste it.

I ran the sharp tip of the blade between her breasts and down her stomach, splitting the fabric of her dress in two. With quick movements, I slipped the material off each shoulder and laughed as it fell to the ground. Ella trembled as she stood in her bra and panties.

“Are you scared, little lamb?” I ran my tongue along her jaw and pressed the knife against her neck. “At some point, you forgot who you bow to. Now …” A dark chuckle rumbled through my chest. “Take off your heels.”

She slid them off, her bare feet touching the asphalt of the parking lot.

“Listen closely, Ella. I’ll only say this once.” My voice was clipped, cold—deadly. “You should have never gone snooping around in those files. I thought I could trust you, but now it’s time to experience the consequences. This time, it’s not Stephen being led to the slaughter.”
