I snorted, Death had carried me a few times, but not in the way most women wanted. “Maybe you’ll find out.”

Cami grinned at me.

“Did Ryan say anything else?” I asked, bringing the conversation to the front and center again.

“No. That was it. At this point, they’ve not closed in on a suspect at all, so the killer is still on the loose.” She grabbed another slice and set it on her plate. “Other than your dad, what’s going on with you?”

I licked the cheese off my fingers, loudly smacking them to annoy my best friend.

“Well, I’m not working for the adult website anymore.”

Cami’s eyes widened. “Really? That’s fantastic!”

“Well, maybe. I still have to figure out a way to pay for his new trial, but …” I flattened my palms against the kitchen counter, staring at my friend. “The bills are paid for now, at least.”

“Wow! You must be popular on the website because those trials are thousands of dollars.”

I tilted my head, waiting to see her expression when I told her. “It wasn’t me.”

A crease dented the smooth skin in between her eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“I mean someone else settled the bill.”

Cami’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. “Wait. Maybe I didn’t understand you correctly. An anonymous person paid your dad’s medical bills?”

“Yup.” I popped the p for extra emphasis.

“Do you think it was Sebastian?” She practically whispered her question as if we were in a crowded room full of nosy people.

“I have no idea. He’s been out of town, so I’ve been unable to ask him. Honestly, if they took care of it anonymously, I’m guessing they don’t want their identity known.”

“Well, shit that’s great, but I want to know.”

I grinned at her. “Me too. If I find out, you’ll be the first person I tell.”

“Hmm, I still think it might be Sebastian, but that’s a lot of money for a bartender to cough up.”

I pondered if I should tell her that he actually owned Velvet Vortex. It was most likely common knowledge so it wouldn’t be a big deal. Apparently, I was getting used to keeping secrets and weighing everything before the words left my mouth. I just wanted to protect Sebastian and his work outside the club.

“He’s not just a bartender. He owns Velvet Vortex along with another partner, Kip, who has also worked at the bar when we’ve been there.”

“Damn, so the guy is loaded. Velvet Vortex is always hoppin.’ Well, good for them.” She grabbed a napkin from the pile on the counter and wiped her mouth. “And here I thought you were dating a broke-ass older man with no hopes of retirement.”

I released an exaggerated, dramatic groan, grinning. “Nope, it’s not the case.”

“Kip is pretty hot too. Maybe if it doesn’t work out with Ryan, I can learn more about Kip.” She laughed. “A girl has to keep her options open.”

“If you were interested in Kip, it might be fun to double date on occasion. The guys are close, and so are we, so we’d all get along. I think I like that idea.” It was hella better than her dating a cop and learning about my double life.

“Yeah, I could see that. For now, I’m excited about Ryan. I do worry about his safety working on the serial killer case, but I guess it’s something I’ll learn to deal with.”

“That would be hard.” I understood. I was concerned about Death and Sebastian’s safety all the time.

Hopefully, Death would show up tonight so I could tell him to watch his tracks since the police were hot on his heels. They would connect me to him if they learned his identity. That shit couldn’t happen.
