“Um, I’m not sure which is the best,” I tease as I start to unbutton his shirt. “This room is very nice. And the bedding is very soft, and I really like the color.” Knox growls. “Being engaged is amazing too. I can touch this sexy, remarkable man whenever I want, and I got this really pretty ring.”

Knox kisses my neck and runs his hands down body. “So, which is your favorite, baby?”

“You, Knox, you’re my favorite everything.”

The rest of our day is spent celebrating each other and this new step on our journey. We have made our way through so much and still found our way back to each other. We’ve learned to communicate and built a relationship based on trust and respect.

As we fall asleep, listening to the sounds of the ocean through the open windows, I turn to Knox. “I’m so glad I moved home.”

Life is hard.

Love is hard.

But with the right person it’s worth everything.

Epilogue

Scarlett

“Knox St. James, I’m going to scream if you don’t get that dog out of this house in five seconds,” I yell for what must be the third or fourth time in as many hours.

“Got it, baby.” My sexy husband runs by the room with the offending dog chasing him out the back door.

I love both —the dog and the man— so much, but I’m hosting family dinner tonight for the first time and that dog keeps getting into everything. He’s just a puppy and can’t help but be excited about new things. Normally, I love that about him, and have the patience to help him explore. It’s one of the reasons that we foster so many puppies for Hunter, but this one is more of a handful than the others.

He’s also Knox’s favorite. I’m going to suggest that we adopt him, but I have to make it through this dinner party first.

It’s been six months since our wedding and Emily has finally decided that I can host a family dinner at our house, which is sooner than Ivy got to do it. Not that we’re in some sort of rivalry, but everything in the St. James family becomes fodder for some sort of competition between the men.

Knox comes running back in with the dog and tells him to go lay down, which of course he does for Knox.

“Why does he listen to you?”

“Because I’m the alpha of this pack.” Knox manages to say with a straight face.

“Really?”

He shrugs. “I mean, he thinks so. I know you’re the one that runs the show. I’m completely useless without you.” He gives me a quick kiss and steals a piece of cheese off the cheese board I’m finishing.

“Uh, huh.” I roll my eyes.

“Do you know how much I love you, Scarlett?” Suddenly serious, he turns me away from the counter and takes the knife out of my hand.

“Of course I do, Knox. I love you, too.” I kiss him, wondering what brought this on.

“I want to talk about something before tonight.” He holds his hand out and I take it, our sign that we are listening to each other.

“Okay. What do you want to talk about?” I’m not worried about whatever he’s going to say. My husband and I can make it through anything.

“I want to have a baby.” He smiles.

“Wouldn’t I be the one having a baby?” I laugh at the look on his face.

“I love you. Of course, it would be you. I want us to have a baby.”

“Now? You think we’re ready to start a family? I was going to suggest we adopt that unruly puppy.”

Knox picks me up and swings me around. “Yes, lets do that. He’s funny, but also Hunter said he would be hard to find a home for because he’s so spirited.”

“Spirited, that’s a sweet word for him.” Laughing I smile at my husband. This man is magical. He can be so serious one second and so happy and lighthearted the next. “Yes, I want to have a baby.”

“A baby!” Knox yells as he twirls me around more and the spirited puppy runs in to join in on the fun, knocking the cheese board off the counter with his tail.

“Knox, get the dog and take him back out till I get this cleaned up.”

He leans over and kisses me until my toes curl. “I love you so much, Mrs. St. James.”

“I love you, Mr. St. James, forever.”
